It seems that more and more people are allergic to foods. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to identify those foods on labels because they have different names. Here’s some help with the most common allergies people have.
- SHELLFISH & FISH -- Look out for: crab, lobster, shrimp, mussels, scampi, octopus (Calamari), oysters, scallops, clam juice, bouillabaisse, Worcestershire sauce, Caesar salad dressing, barbecue sauces.
-
MILK -- Look out for: casein, whey, lactose, hidden dairy in powdered products.
-
PEANUTS & TREE NUTS -- Look out for: artificial flavoring, baked goods, candy, chili, chocolate, sauces, granola or trail mix, bread, marzipan, nougat, or other foods fried in peanut oil.
-
EGGS -- Look out for: albumin, globulin, mayonnaise, “ovo-” powdered eggs, nougats, pasta, some artificial flavors.
-
WHEAT -- Look out for: bran, bulgur, couscous, pasta, semolina.
-
SOY -- Look out for: bean curd, tofu, tamari, tempeh, artificial flavor and colors.
Besides foods that you eat, some of these allergens may be in your medicine, sauces, and toiletries. Careful out there; I don’t want you blowing up and floating away like Harry Potter’s Aunt Marge!
