At Weekday, we are so lucky to have the best specials teachers around! We enjoy Library, Music, Spanish and of course Movement! Here is a peek at what Movement has been about lately:
Ms. Lindsay has been working with our 3's, 4's and kindergartners on basketball skills. Dribbling a basketball is a gross motor skill that encourages hand-eye coordination, concentration and crossing the midline. In Movement, we practice ball control and dribbling in two steps:
Step 1: Two-handed bounce & catch. Place a spot on the ground (a target per se) for the child to aim at. Using two hands, push a kickball-sized ball down with both hands. Have it bounce and then catch with two hands. Repeat. Focus on the force needed to press the ball onto the target to then catch.
Step 2: One handed dribble. Using the same set-up, have the child push the ball down with one hand onto the target. With a wide, firm hand, encourage them to use force to push the ball up and down repeatedly. Attempt two bounces in a row. This is a difficult skill to master!
Here's a good instructional video that follows the same teachings: https://youtu.be/48ZuHYPIrXg?si=FT5L3V3ncqgub6Sh
It's been so fun watching your children learn new gross motor skills; they are so eager to learn and move! Remember to "move it, move it!" at home!
