Listen & Learn

“Most of the successful people I've known

are the ones who do more listening than talking.” Bernard Baruch

January 15, 2023

We have been engaged in meaningful work to clearly align purpose and vision with goals and objectives through the strategic planning process. The development of thoughtfully crafted strategic goals should engage the voices of our students, staff, parents, and community. Over the past 12 months, our school district engaged 9,104 participants through 25 Thought Exchanges. You shared 7,389 thoughts that were rated 145,676 times and included an average of 20 ratings per person. To complement Thought Exchange feedback, we facilitated nearly 20 in-person focus groups including several hundred participants. We hear you.

Creativity, innovation, and collaboration are all keys to high level problem solving. The work of our strategic planning process is nearly complete and focused on reimagining the allocation of time, enhancing student & staff wellness, supporting culture & community, and advancing student success. Over the next several weeks, our team will finalize our objectives and strategies that will support student and staff success.

We have a responsibility to advance the future progress of our schools. Thank you for sharing your voice with us to help identify the priorities that will enable our team to support our students, staff, and learning community.

All my best,

Dr. Rui Dionisio

Superintendent of Schools

IHHS Athletic Update

Jake Willis is a junior at Indian Hills and participates as a member of the bowling team and the ice hockey team in the Winter! He finds time to excel at both sports and keep up with his school work. This hardwork has paid off as Jake was just named the Bergen Record’s Male athlete of the Week! He opened the bowling season with (6) straight games of excellent bowling! His lowest score was a 199 and his highest was 268! We are very proud of Jake and his accomplishment!

Male Athlete of the Week Article - Jake Willis

A big congratulations to Junior Gymnasts Carlin Fatuova and Lindsay Thompson on being named as 1st Team All County Gymnasts at the Bergen County Women’s Coaches Association dinner on December 13th. Carlin and Lindsay were two of only ten athletes named as 1st Team All County Gymnasts. The gymnastic coaches are very excited to have Carlin and Lindsay back for next year!

On December 14th, Raffi Buchakjian attended the Bergen County Coaches Association dinner and accepted his 1st Team All County award for Cross Country. Raffi was one of nine runners recognized by the BCCA for 1st Team honors.  That is an unbelievable accomplishment, but made even more outstanding is the fact that Raffi just started running Cross Country last year! Although he is still undecided about a college, he is looking to continue running at the collegiate level.

Instead of having a team pasta night before their first game, the Indian Hills Girls Basketball Team threw a surprise baby shower for Coach Buccino at Frank’s Pizza. Coach was absolutely surprised and loved every minute of it! Congratulations Coach Buccino!

On Saturday, December 18th, the Indian Hills Girls Basketball Team hosted their annual Blue Gold and Braves Day at the Girls Varsity Basketball game vs Ridgefield Park. All FLOW rec programs were invited and there was a great showing! Coach Buccino and the team interacted with the rec programs after the game and showed them all what a great place Indian Hills is to be!

Sophomore Samantha Goworek finished in 3rd place at the Second Annual Garfield High School Girls Wrestling Holiday Tournament! Excellent job Sam!

Inscape Literary Magazine

The 2022 issue of Inscape, the Indian Hills art and literary magazine, received a First Place Award from the American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA). The ASPA hosts this prestigious national competition for publications ranging from magazines to yearbooks and focuses on elevating and highlighting not only the publications produced but the students who work tirelessly on them. The competition is judged through a variety of criteria: design, content, theme, and editing.

Both Indian Hills students and staff submit poetry, short prose and fiction, artwork, and photography as the school year progresses. The Inscape staff then works diligently to review the submissions; select works for publication; edit; design; and then lay out the year-end magazine. This is the third time that the ASPA has recognized Inscape. Inscape has also been awarded the National Council of Teachers for English REALM (Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines) Award multiple times.

Congratulations to the Inscape staff and editors-in-chief, Carmen Noya (‘23) and Meghan Mainelli (‘23), as well as advisors Dan Keyser, John Mungiello, and Dianna Peller.

Several students from Ms. Crossley’s Fashion & Technology classes are planning to participate and compete in the NJ State Fashion Design Contest for 2023.  The competition is sponsored by DAR, Daughters of the American Revolution.  Amaya Pichardo is planning to submit a cotton blend, long, lined coat with pockets and buttons.  Emma Graffanino is planning to submit a satin dress with a wrap front, zipper, and bow at the back.  Ashley Marscovetra has created a knit jumper with side seam pockets.  Isabella Gartner is planning to submit velour shorts with pockets, drawstring, and double elastic waistband.  Please join us in celebrating our students’ hard work and wish them luck in the competition.

IHHS at Radio City

Congratulations to the Indian Hills A Cappella Choir for their Dec 15th outstanding vocal performance on Radio City's Christmas Spectacular Stage!  Director Ms. Susan Heerema organized and  collaborated this year with Pascack Hills Director Margarita Elkin. The program sung was We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Carol of the Bells, and Mary, Did you Know?

IHHS Holiday Concert

Indian Hills Holiday Concert under the direction of Mr. Friedman (Band) and Ms. Heerema (Choir & Orchestra) was a resounding success.  Starting off with Elizabeth Zargarian’s rendition of our national anthem the Indian Hills Choir also sang their schools alma mater.  Ms. Heerema’s Orchestra and Choir sang and played holiday carols and Mr. Friedman’s band performed a variety of pieces with holiday themes and great playing performances.

A Season of Giving at IHHS

On December 2, 2022, Indian Hills Hosted children from the Paterson Boys and Girls Club for Holiday Festival. The event was a combined effort from the Indian Hills  Interact and Holiday Festival organizations, Mr. and Mrs. Claus (Coach Hill and Kim Marino) and our celebrity mascot - Brave! The Clubhouse Kids were treated to pizza and yummy desert and hot cocoa, served by the Oakland/Franklin Lakes Rotary Club and Interact Club volunteers. The kids also enjoyed various craft activities, a holiday selfie station, face painting and tattoos as well as a gift exchange with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Special thanks to the PTSO, Mom's & Dad's Club of Oakland, Oakland-Franklin Lakes Rotary, our chaperones and security and all the Interact/Holiday Festival Student Volunteers that made this an enjoyable evening.

Student Government Gives Back

Congratulations to the Indian Hills and Ramapo High School Football Programs for each being named Divisional Sportsmanship Winners in the Super Football Conference for this past fall. The award is even more special as the voting is done by our divisional teams and coaches.

Congratulations to the RHS Wrestling Team (@wrestlingramapo) on their 5-1 start! They had a thrilling 36-35 win against Ridgewood that came down to the last match with Ramapo trailing by 2 points. Sophomore Jason Sansone stepped onto the mat for the final match needing a win and did so decisively. That result pushed the team to victory who had not beaten Ridgewood in 13 years. A big shout out to those students who came to support the team and to coaches Bunger and Anzano for helping to keep the team focused and ready!! They are currently ranked among the top teams in North Jersey.

RHS Guidance Update

The Fundamentals of Wellness class welcomed RHS Alumni Rebecca Nussenbaum, Mrs. Nussenbaum, Ms. Capeci and Gianna Capeci in discussing The Seeing Eye with their special pups Po (named after Ramapo!) and Elise. The class was educated on the training Seeing Eye dogs receive, how they are matched with those in need and what happens when a guide dog doesn’t pass their training! Po and Elise were excellent ambassadors.

The RHS Guidance Department hosted a Military Fair on Wednesday, December 14th. Mr. Walty organized the Fair, featuring representatives from the Army, Naval Academy, Marines, Navy Recruiter, Army National Guard and Coast Guard. Students of all grade levels were invited to attend the Fair during lunch periods.
