RIH District Events

Another amazing Bergen County Teen Arts Festival at Bergen County Community College as our RIH students and staff participated in a full day celebration of the arts including dance, music, and theater performances, and a visual arts display with over 40 Bergen County High Schools sharing their amazing students' works.

We had two artists selected for additional exhibition at the Bergen County Administration Building next month. Congratulations!

Indian Hills High School Senior Jaclyn Kotora’s piece “Splatter”

Ramapo High School Senior Marcus Rowe’s piece “Bigger Fish to Fry”

RIH Aviation students explored the former aircraft carrier USS Intrepid now a museum docked in NYC.   From the record-breaking Concorde Alpha Delta G-BOAD to NASA’s retired space shuttle Enterprise, students saw planes, jets, and flying machines they’ve been learning to fly on the simulators in their classrooms.  The Intrepid experience brings history, service, and science together as students were able to board the Intrepid aircraft carrier, examine original artifacts, view historic footage, and explore interactive exhibits that brought their aviation experiences to life.

Indian Hills Updates

The sun was shining on a beautiful day at the New York Botanical Gardens for Indian Hills Horticulture students during a senior capstone fieldtrip.  Students enjoyed the day visiting the Rockefeller rose garden, Haupt Conservatory, home garden center, perennial and seasonal beds, and more as they completed a photo scavenger hunt to capture the beauty of the day exploring all of their horticulture units of study in real life.

Indian Hills Horticulture students also finished planting the community garden; filled with peppers, tomatoes, beans, broccoli, herbs, and much more.  The interdisciplinary project will continue during the summer with the help of Interact students who will maintain the garden and harvest fresh produce to donate to the local food pantry.

Indian Hills UPSMR students from grades 9-12 came together for a multi-grade level mixer filled with team builders, and a collaborative scavenger hunt, to bring the Trout in the Classroom program to a close for the year.  Grade 9 students raised trout throughout the year from egg to fingerling while learning about habitats, life cycles, and threats to trout from human activities.  Sophomores, juniors, and seniors attended the trip to finally see our trout hatchlings released as part of the trout stocking program into the Wanaque River after a few years of hiatus due to covid.

Ramapo Updates

Congratulations to Ramapo High School Robotics for their winnings at the 19th Annual North Jersey Robotics Competition held at Passaic County Community College. Ramapo Robotics took home 3 trophies: 1st Place Domino Challenge, 2nd place Tire Change Challenge, and the School Spirit Award! We are very proud of our team and their accomplishments.

Lesley Klein, co-founder of Miller Klein Group, returned to Ramapo High School to speak to business students about the job interviewing process. She offered her expertise from her many years of experience in Human Resources and assisted students in writing their resume and crafting responses to common interview questions.

On May 24th, sophomores and juniors in the University Program for Engineering and Design visited MAC Products in Kearny, NJ. MAC Products does engineering and custom manufacturing for trains, electrical power systems, and other infrastructure around the country. Their motto is "We don't do easy." Students learned about real-world engineering, including design, machining, welding, construction, electrical engineering, testing, and quality assurance. They had a great time and learned a lot! Thanks to Mr. Caulfield and Mr. Russell for chaperoning, and to Science Supervisor Mrs. Martone for helping plan the trip!

Who says "old school" is not fun? Not Ramapo's AP Biology classes! This week we repeated a classic genetics experiment using Drosophila melanogaster (the fruit fly). The flies were anesthetized using "Fly Nap" and then examined under a dissecting microscope. The anesthetized flies were separated into males and females and then put into new containers for mating. In about 10 days we'll see the results of our genetic crosses. Will the flies have white eyes? Red eyes? Sepia eyes? Will they have normal or vestigial wings? Stay tuned...

This week Ramapo’s Horticulture classes beautified the campus as part of their quarterly project. First they planned and sketched out their gardens by selecting annuals that would grow well in their section and using basic landscape design principles. They were responsible for weeding and preparing the garden bed, planting, mulching, and of course, cleaning up! As a culminating activity they’ll prepare a presentation that outlines all of their hard work!

On Friday, May 12th, Ramapo students participated in our first-ever Hackathon! Students learned about computer programming, ate pizza from Uncle Louie's, and started projects to submit to the Congressional App Challenge, a national programming competition. This competition kicks off this spring, and apps are due in June. All students interested in programming are encouraged to sign up!

Juniors from the University Program for Engineering and Design delivered lessons to introduce new students to Computer Science. Presenters included: Deana Marchuk, Eleni Vassiliou, Gabriella Vona, Charlene Chan, Owen Elkin, Amir Rakhimov, Joseph Huang, and Justin John.

Sophomore Matthew Ostrovsky won First Place in the Games category, and junior Joseph Huang won First Place in the Apps Category.

Teacher Matt Caulfield and Science and UP Supervisor Lisa Martone supervised. The Hackathon was made possible by a generous grant from the APTS. Thank you!
