Parker Palmer is one of the better writers and thinkers on the life of faith. In fact, I regularly return to a small volume of his entitled "Let Your Life Speak," an insightful reflection on spiritual discernment and decision making. Still writing in his eighties, Palmer's new book, On the Brink of Everything: Grace, Gravity, and Getting Old, offers the wisdom and perspective of age. He writes:
"I no longer ask, 'What do I want to let go of, and what do I want to hang on to?' Instead I ask, 'What do I want to let go of, and what do I want to give myself to?'" He goes on to suggest "The desire to 'hang on' comes from a sense of scarcity and fear. The desire to 'give myself' comes from a sense of abundance and generosity."
I would add that living with a sense of abundance and generosity is life's greatest joy. It allows us to give ourselves to important matters, to people and causes and ideas.
We'll not only talk about it this weekend, we invite you to do it...to live with a sense of abundance and give yourself to the present and current mission of Covenant. We've re-configured Covenant Impacts Charlotte this year to make it more impactful and invite you to participate. It's a great way to serve, to get to know new people, and to understand our city. I'll be serving at Urban Ministry Center and would love to have you join me. Or, you can join one of the other many projects. Click here to sign up.
In addition, we'll receive financial pledges for next year's work at Covenant. It's an exciting time in the life of our church, and we can only accomplish all we've set out to do with your strong support. Will you please say 'yes' and join in making a gift or pledge to the 2019 effort? You can do that by clicking here.
Remember, this week we'll have one unified service at 10 a.m. in the Sanctuary. The music will be outstanding, the service uplifting, and the preaching challenging. You can prepare by reading here.
