Trail Conditions Update:

A Battle Between Rain & Snow

Winter continues to keep us on our toes!

According to our friends at Environment Canada, rain is expected to slow by this evening, with temperatures not dropping below freezing until later tonight. Unfortunately, even once things cool down, it will take several hours for the snow to freeze, leaving only a very small window for any possible grooming. At best, this means limited grooming on the stadium and loop for Saturday — and only if conditions cooperate.

Right now, the snowpack is extremely saturated. That means it may look frozen on top but remain soft and mushy underneath (the worst kind of surprise). Grooming beyond "the loop" in these conditions would do more harm than good, so natural snow trails will not see any grooming until the rain stops and the base can freeze all the way through.

As much as we dislike making this request, but it would be best for everyone to stay off the trails for the weekend, especially if rain continues. Natural snow areas are currently very “punchy,” and refraining from skiing these trails will help protect the base for future skiing. We encourage you all to take advantage of the many other indoor and outdoor recreation options available throughout the city while conditions improve.

If temperatures do drop a little more than forecasted, our grooming team will do their best to get the loop open so some skiing is available. When in doubt, please check Nordic Pulse for the most up-to-date information on whether the loop is skiable — this will always be the best place to confirm current conditions.

If Grooming is done on the Loop, to help minimize snow damage, geomat will be placed from the parking lot to the loop, creating a clear walking route and helping keep feet off the snow. We ask that everyone use this walking option.

These are never fun decisions, but they are made to protect the trails and give us the best chance at good skiing once winter decides to cooperate again. Thanks for your patience — and for helping us keep the snow where it belongs.

Skills Development Program Update

Hello SDP Parents and Coaches,

This is a quick follow-up for anyone who may have missed our earlier message.

Due to ongoing rain and poor snow conditions, all Skills Development Program sessions for tomorrow, Saturday, January 31, are cancelled. The Chocolate Race has also been postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date.

With the snowpack fully saturated, conditions would either be icy or very soft, creating unsafe skiing and risking damage to the trail base. While we never like cancelling programs, this decision was made to prioritize safety and protect the trails.

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility. We will share updates as soon as conditions improve.

Slippery When Wet

Parking Lot Heads-Up

Note for all: the parking lots are currently very slick. Today’s rain on top of ice has turned things into more of a curling rink than a parking lot.

Help is on the way — the gravel truck is booked for tomorrow morning and will be treating the main parking lots, the dog road, and the Barking Lot to improve traction.

While we are not encouraging anyone to venture out in these conditions, we know some may still swing by. If you do, please walk safe. Cross Country Ski boots are not known to be the best ice hikers.

Thanks for your patience and understanding as we ride out another chapter of this “cold one week, rain the next” winter saga.

Do Not Fear, Winter isn't over yet!

A quick reminder for everyone:

Snow will return. Temperatures will drop. Skis will glide again.

Freeze–thaw cycles have become part of our winter rhythm, and while they can be frustrating, they are now a familiar chapter in our season.

We are incredibly fortunate to have a dedicated grooming and operations team working behind the scenes to deliver the best possible conditions whenever nature cooperates. Sometimes, doing right by the trails means taking a short pause — giving the snow time to reset so we can enjoy it longer.

In the meantime, this is a great chance to explore other facilities, try a different activity, use some new muscles, or simply enjoy a bit of well-earned rest. Winter will be back — and when it is, we’ll be ready.

Thank you for your patience, your positivity, and your continued support of Caledonia Nordic.

Retail Therapy, Nordic Style

Nothing cures the rainy-day blues quite like a little online shopping — especially when it comes with neon vibes and Nordic pride.

We are excited to share a fresh way for members to show their Caledonia Nordic spirit: club clothing is now available online, featuring our new retro 80s–inspired Caledonia logo. Think classic style, bold colours, and just the right amount of throwback flair.

We are proud to partner with Sprague Skate Shop to bring this to life. Through this partnership, members can choose from a wide range of Caledonia Nordic apparel, including zip-ups, pullovers, t-shirts, toques, and more. Perfect for the trails, post-ski coffee, or everyday wear around town — there is something for everyone.

Orders are placed online and typically take about two weeks to complete. This is a new system for us, so there may be a few small bugs as we get things rolling, but it is an exciting step forward and a great way to support both your club and a local business.

Check out the options, place an order, and wear your Caledonia pride loud and proud — rain or shine.

Volunteers Needed

Fresh off the excitement of the Teck BC Cup, we are already looking ahead to another huge milestone for the club.

From March 5–8, 2026, Caledonia Nordic Ski Club will host a combined IBU Regional Event, Western Canadian Biathlon Championships, and BC Provincial Championships — one of the largest biathlon events in North America.

Athletes from across Canada, the U.S., and beyond are expected, and events of this scale only happen with strong volunteer support. Whether you can help for a single shift or the full event, we’d love to have you involved.
