Supporting The Arts & Arts Councils Everywhere

Volume 4 No. 40| November 4, 2022

Notes from the Editor:

Will there ever be a week when I can open an Arts Blast by saying, "Guess what! No problems this week!" Thursday, the Arts Blast website turned into a Wordpress opening page. What??

When Live Chat told me I was No. 215 in line for help, I walked away. Three times.

ON THE OTHER HAND, Wednesday was a wonderful day! I saw and thoroughly enjoyed Butterflies Are Free at Riverside Theatre. It's there for another week, ending its run Nov. 25. It was so great to back at our fabulous theatre!

😁👏😁🎉😁💥😁🎊😁🎈😅

UPDATE! After a wait of 46 minutes in a fourth attempt at contacting tech support, a magic 🧚🏼‍♀️ fairy popped up and within ten minutes had willimiller.com back online! Oh, happy day!

Here's that popular link to the St. John webcams. Yes, it really is that gorgeous.

Open Call Auditions!

We are welcoming the submission of short video clips for performances for our FPC Christmas Variety Show. We will feature multiple short, high-level performances, and you will have a combo accompaniment that evening for your performance. We welcome short clips of singing a capella or playing your instrument to be sent to Peter Mahtani at petermahtani@firstpresvero.org. We ask all clips to be submitted no later than Thursday November 10. From there we will make 10 selections and give call backs for scheduling rehearsals and the performance itself. The two performances are December 9 and December 11 in McAfee Hall. Please note that the audition submission does not need to be perfectly polished yet, just a verse and a chorus of whatever is being sung or played is fine. For the final performances, music should be memorized completely.

Camille Claudel 1915

Nov. 5, 6:00 p.m.

This film explores the life of Auguste Rodin’s protégé (and later mistress), Camille Claudel, as she struggles to find her identity as an artist and becomes confined to an asylum in the South of France by her family, where she will never sculpt again. Inspired by letters between Claudel and her brother, poet Paul Claudel, the story of Camille Claudel's 29-year confinement is in itself a tale of defiance against social norms - and a testament to the power of creativity and fortitude.

Registration is required, and space is limited. The film screening and Q&A will be held in the Polk Museum of Art's Auditorium.

ARMORY ART CENTER’S EXHIBITIONS HIGHLIGHT WEARABLE ART AND CANCER SURVIVORS

Contemporary art jewelry and reimagined radiotherapy masks celebrate the art of

perspective and perseverance in two recently opened exhibitions, “Verdant Bodies: A Contemporary Art Jewelry Exhibition” and “Radiant Nation: Masks”.

Verdant Bodies” will be on display in the Armory’s Montgomery Hall through Friday, Nov. 18. This exhibition offers insight into how makers in the art jewelry and metalsmithing fields interpret their environments.

Radiant Nation” will be on display in the East Gallery from Friday, Nov. 4 through Friday, Dec. 16. The show features a collection of reimagined radiotherapy masks transformed by artists into vibrant, powerful forms of expression. This exhibition is inspired by artist and cancer survivor David Charlowe. In 2019, after surviving a bout with cancer, Charlowe asked several artists to repurpose nearly two dozen radiation masks.
