What a beautiful week to fire up the combines! Corn harvest was in FULL swing this week, with both Wanstead and Alvinston kicking off corn harvest 2023 with a BANG! This is the longest stretch of consecutive days of good weather in what seems like forever! From the loads of corn coming in, moistures ranged from 19-28%, with many yields reported at or above crop averages. We expect approximately 15% of the crop in our draw area to have been taken off so far.
As the corn comes off, we have unfortunately seen issues with test weights and vomitoxin emerge. Many corn fields are just on the grade 3/grade 2 cusp for test weight, with 333 g/0.5L (53 lb/A bu) being the breakeven point. Pockets of higher-vomitoxin corn have been popping up, with some test results at 8ppm+, but the bulk of the crop remains under 2ppm. We will have to get farther into the harvest to better identify why some pockets/fields have been more susceptible than others. Unsprayed fields, fields that are growing a seed known for a tighter husk, or fields more prone to disease may be worth taking off earlier to reduce higher chances/amounts of VOM. The longer the corn stays in the field, the worse it can become. That being said, there are options for moving corn that has a higher vom test. Today's rain put a pause on corn harvest, but we expect things to get going again this weekend. Wanstead and Alvinston both plan to be open at 8am tomorrow, but wet corn space is limited, so please call before bringing in any deliveries!
