Planting
We would estimate that our draw area is about 30% complete on planting progress. So far, we see mostly corn in the ground, with the odd soybean field. The temperatures have been cool, but emergence should be okay due to the soil temperatures the crops were planted into. Soils on Sunday were measured in the 60 degrees Fahrenheit range, although they are expected to have cooled off since then. It still would not hurt the corn crop to stay in the ground until the cold snap ends.
Wheat
The wheat locally really enjoyed the last few days of showers. The cooler temperatures did slow down any growth, keeping the majority of the wheat in our area in the GS32-34 growth stages. Thankfully, the weather also reduced the additional growth of weeds which have started to pop up in fields. We are now looking for some warmer weather and sunshine so that we can get herbicide and fungicide applied on the wheat before it enters the boot stage. We are hoping to get in the fields early next week to spray once overnight temperatures return to a minimum of 5 degrees Celsius 24-hours before and after application. To do that though, we will need some sun to dry everything out!
Fertilizer, Chemical, and Seed
We are getting geared up for burndown application once the herbicide on the wheat is completed. Chemical, fertilizer and seed orders are moving out of our warehouses quickly via pickups, deliveries, and applications. If you would like to store your inputs on farm, please let us know and we can set up an arrangement!
Here is a picture of our staff busy last week applying fertilizer with the airflow spreader at one of our grower's fields! Thanks to Mike McGrail for the picture! Send your farming pictures to meganm@wansteadfarmerscoop.com for a chance to be featured in our future weekly emails!
What are our agronomists up to?
Now that we are in the full swing of planting, our agronomists want to remind everyone that they are here to help provide any recommendations or expert opinions that you may need! If you would like their input on anything, please give them a ring on their cells!
