AGRONOMY WEEKLY NEWS

Corn & Soybeans

Planting has finally wrapped up for much of the area, but approximately 10-15% of soybean acres are still untouched. We may see those fields planted once things dry up again, or we may see some unseeded acreage benefit kick in after the planting deadline on June 30th. Corn side dressing and herbicide applications are making up most of the activity over the past week with periods of dry weather providing some windows to get jobs done. Post emerge herbicide applications were in full force. Always consider using a residual and multiple modes of action for best control of grass and broadleaves. IP beans need to be monitored heavily as weeds are hard to control when they get too big. Ideally spraying when they are under a few inches tall is best. Don’t let your corn get too tall before spraying for weeds. Most herbicides need to be applied before the 6th leaf stage.

Today's rains will provide an additional moisture top-up for the crops after last week's heat. Overall, this was more than we would like to have gotten in most areas, but unfortunately, we don't have much say in that. Most of our draw area got between 1 inch to 1 and 3/4 of an inch of rain in today's storm with some sporadic hail. Hopefully the fields can manage to get the water away now so the plant is not sitting in moisture for too long. We know that soybeans don't like to have wet feet for long periods of time.

Wheat

The wheat continues to turn quickly, and is progressing well. Maturity wise, we may see some combines looking to start next week. If future rains hold off this may be our earliest harvest on record. Today's rainfall will now put field conditions into question, so we will have to wait and see what the weather brings over the next 7 days to see how much the fields dry up to see whether the combines are even able to roll. Despite the wet ground conditions, we are fortunate to not see widespread lodging given today's storm and yesterday's wind. At this point, we are not coming out with a drying-promotion for harvest, but if threatening rains look to impact quality this harvest, we are prepared to change if necessary.

If you are interested in double-cropping in any soybeans, we do have seed available.

Agronomy Tip of the Week

Mike's Tip of the week: "If you are seeing heavy weed pressure in your wheat, consider doing a Pre Harvest Burndown. Roundup, Eragon and Merge is a good combo to make things easier on you and the combine".
