Harvest
Over the last week the weather has been challenging to resume harvest. Thankfully, majority of the soybeans have been harvested off the field, with little quality issues, and some moisture increase. Corn has been harvested at any time possible, the end is in sight for most growers with corn in the field. The corn yields, quality, and moisture has definitely been a talking point this year.
Seed
Now is the time to book your seed. Early Order and Early Pay discounts have been applied. We have been able to compile a great deal of plot data to assist you with your decision making. More data is arriving as the harvest progresses and this will be made available too. There are seed guide’s available at both branches to help you better understand what each variety brings to the table. This is the time to consider how your own soybeans and corn performed this year. Take note of standability, harvestability, yield, and more. Contact your Wanstead agronomist to assist you and to get your seed varieties booked for the 2022 season.
Wheat
The wet weather has put additional stress on the wheat crop. Luckily, a lot of the wheat that was in the ground early has been able to push out a great deal of roots, and tillers. Doing a drive by of your wheat crop is not sufficient enough to establish it’s health. Getting out into the field, and digging up plants to find white roots is best. There has been a great deal of wind events that have caused leaf burn and discoloration. Linked below is an article from Michigan State University that explains the purpling of the leaf.

What are our agronomists up to?
Our agronomists are busy reviewing seed varieties, discussing seed bookings for 2022, going over new chemical offerings and assessing plot data. Plot data packages are available now, more will be published shortly as the data becomes available. IP premiums for 2022 are now available to help you decide which variety is best for your farm. Soil sampling has mostly wrapped up with the wet weather, but if we do see some dry weather before the winter freeze, they will resume. Give your agronomist a call and they will be happy to assist you with your needs.
