AGRONOMY WEEKLY NEWS

Corn

Corn is looking good!! Fungicide spray is doing a good job of holding off disease. Some fields are experiencing tar spot and gibberella. These fields were healthy two weeks ago. Yields should be average to good in most areas. There are some very good fields and struggling fields depending on the amount of rain.

We still need to accumulate more heat units on the corn crop to help it black layer and finish. As with beans, harvest is expected to be more on-par with harvest timing compared to the last 50-years, rather than the past 5-years (aka. later).

Soybeans

Soybeans continue to turn, with some early fields estimated to be ready as early as this weekend (80-100% leaf drop), but there is definitely variablility across the county. Overall, most soys are looking ok. Water damaged soybeans are turning much faster than healthier beans. With good weather currently forecasted, we are keeping our fingers crossed that we get a nice long stretch of good weather to get the crop off this fall. We will need some dry weather to accommodate harvest and burndown timing.

Fall Burndowns are in full swing. Get your field clean, and keep it clean! The threshold for preharvest burndown timing is 80% leaf drop (90% colour change)! See photo below. If you are thinking you may want your field to be sprayed, please be sure to give your agronomist a call to get put on the list. If you do a preharvest burndown with Eragon and Glyphosate, you must wait 7 days to harvest, but if just Eragon is applied, you just need to wait a minimum of 3 days.

We want to assure all of our customers that our Alvinston elevators will be operational (post-storm) for soybean harvest, and we look forward to serving you!

Wheat

Wheat seed season is in full swing. This year, we will have Blaze SRWT seed in bulk, as well as a new C&M wheat variety called Swoop. Swoop is known for the same yield potential, but more straw!

In 2023/24, will we be accepting HRWT, SWWT and SRWT. HRWT is pulling more acres this year due to its premium over SRWT. (Prices on website).

We are also treating wheat seed this year. Please call early to get on the list for cleaning and treating seed!

In preparation for new crop, we are getting our facilities ready for harvest time. This includes cleaning up off farm wheat and old crop soybean loads that want to move before new crop soybeans come off, and emptying many of our bins on site. Please call us to arrange movement on full or part-loads of either of these commodities so we can help your operation be fully empty prior to this coming harvest. The closer we get to soybean harvest, the premium between old crop and new crop beans will continue to converge.

Variable rate spreading and straight rate spreading of fertilizer has been a challenge due to the weather. As soon as things dry up, we will keep things rolling ahead of harvest. In the meantime, if you have not already, we encourage you to get your plans for fertilizer application lined up before harvest! It is not too late to soil sample! We get results back within a couple weeks, and fertilizer plans can be tailored for your needs based on those results! Fall fertilizer including P&K and Sulfur is very important to help give your wheat the best possible start.
