Worship this Week
February 21, 2021 - Lent 1
This week, we begin the season of Lent, a time of preparation, a time of naming of what has been shattered as a first step towards healing and recovery. The “anchor” image we are using for this season is beach glass - which illustrates the beauty and great worth of that which has been broken and shattered. Like beach glass, we have been broken and tumbled by the oceans of life, and recently, storm-tossed in the Covid “sea”. We are invited to rediscover the one who finds us washed up on the beach and recognizes our beauty and our immeasurable worth.

This Sunday, Kathy Booth & Rev. Bruce will help us begin a conversation about one area of brokenness: the important issue of addiction. Bring some beach glass (if you can) and join the conversation as we seek wholeness and beauty in the midst of our brokenness.

The Worship video is also available from our website.

Download scripture readings and hymns here.

Tax Receipts
2020 charitable donation tax receipts will be sent in the mail by the end of February. If you have not received yours by March 7, please contact Val Austring.
We extend our blessings and congratulations to Clayton Roy, son of Donna & Glenn Roy, and Dallas Halldorson who will be married this Saturday in Whistler!
Daytime Shelter Needs your Letters and Prayers
At the February 16th Council meeting, the Council endorsed a Justice and Service motion requesting both White Rock and Surrey City Councils to provide a place for an emergency extreme weather daytime Shelter for the homeless community. A delegation from the church will present this request Feb 22 to WR City Council at their evening meeting which is online.

We invite you to write to White Rock City Council and Surrey City Council and we welcome prayers from everyone for this vital need to be met. Please contact Kathy Booth, Convenor for our Justice and Service Committee, with any questions.

Thank you to the many Shelter volunteers and others supporting this request!
Lost and Found
Are you missing a certain article of clothing and wondering where on earth you left it? Maybe it’s waiting to be rescued from quarantine at the Crescent site of Peninsula United Church.

If you are looking for any of the following let us know:
  • Dockers black jacket
  • Printed purple scarf
  • Knee length black sweater
  • Red scarf
  • Wind River jacket
  • Navy meshy sweater
  • Grey Utex coat
  • Thin black scarf with glitter
  • Grey and white tee shirt with roses
  • Grey and black Nuage coat
  • Lightweight black sweater
  • Cream scarf with a button opening .

Photos are available from the church office if you are curious. Pick up can be arranged.
Would you like to become an ‘official’ member of Peninsula United Church?

On Easter Sunday we will be recognizing those folks who are transferring their membership from their former congregations.

Please email or call Rev. Janice if you are interested in transferring your membership. If you have never formally joined the United Church of Canada and would like to know more about membership, Janice would love to hear from you too!
Thanks to the Angels who are spreading kindness and joy!

Some of our members at Crescent Gardens received bouquets of tulips from someone in the congregation a couple of weeks ago. Being remembered in this way by someone in the church family was very much appreciated especially since the residents had just begun a two week lock-down period. Thankfully, the lock-down at Crescent Gardens is now over.

Last week, we heard an expression of appreciation from Kitty Penny who lives in another Senior's Residence. Kitty has to stay in her room and is feeling isolated. Another mystery "Flower Angel" from the church sent her a violet plant. Kitty said,
"It is not a small little plant either. The first flower is coming out and it is going to be lovely. I have something very pleasant to look at. It gives me a lift."

And there’s more: Some Peninsula UC Angels sent homemade Valentine cards to residents in Seniors Care facilities in the community. These expressions of love were appreciated!
The Upper Room Daily Devotional Booklet
A message from Pat Anderson

The Upper Room first shows up in the Bible as a room upstairs where Jesus shared the last supper with the disciples.

My daily devotion starts with the Upper Room beginning with a Bible passage and then the meditation for the day. So often I am aware that I am sharing my devotion with a global Christian community in over 100 countries.

This booklet is published monthly. If you are interested in receiving the Upper Room through the church office, please phone me at 604-535-5652 to be on the list.

Right now we have 4 areas with openings (click for details), and seek applications by Feb 28th. These opportunities are not limited to church leaders and staff. All United Church people are invited to discern and apply for roles they feel called to.

The Nominations Committee looks forward to discerning who will serve in these roles. Thank you for considering yourself and sharing this invitation with others in your community and networks.

Please consider your gifts and skills, and those of your friends and colleagues. You might feel as though you are answering a spiritual call when you express interest in one of these positions; you might be encouraged by friends and colleagues who recognize that your abilities might be the gifts that are needed at this time. We recognize that diversity - in terms of racial and ethnic background, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, abilities, geographical location, vocation, or economic status - make us a stronger church, and we are committed to proactively addressing inequities and historic patterns of exclusion.
The Coldest Night of the Year is coming again on February 19th, 20th, and 21st.

THERE’S STILL TIME TO MAKE A DONATION TO OUR TEAM “UNITED FEET FOR THE STREET”.

Please help us make a difference in the lives of people who are hungry, homeless and hurting in our community? To make a donation please click here (Donation cheques must be made payable to "Coldest Night of the Year", NOT TO United Feet for the Street.)
Local fundraising efforts will benefit SOURCES, our local Community Resources Society serving more than 5,000 people living in poverty in White Rock, Delta, Langley and beyond.

If you'd like more information please click here or call or email Glenn Roy at 604-728-8174. Thanks for your Support.

Little Free Pantry
ThirdSpace seeks wood-working/construction help. We want to build a “Little Free Pantry” outside the ThirdSpace site. We have a start in a wood cabinet but it will need glass in the doors, paint and secure placement, and a weather-proof roof.

Here is a link to the Little Free Pantry movement based on the Little Free Library. If you can help, contact Elizabeth Winkler 604-996-5871 or leave a message with Nikkie at the church office
