Worship this Week
Sunday Online Worship - July 25, 2021
Sunday Online Worship - July 25, 2021 - Jesus our Saviour

Who is Jesus for you? This is our third week of exploring different images and experiences of Jesus using a new book by Diana Butler Bass, Freeing Jesus: Rediscovering Jesus as Friend, Teacher, Savior, Lord, Way and Presence
Following the reflections of Jesus as Friend and Teacher, we will now consider Jesus as our Saviour. Did you know there are only two references to Jesus as ‘Saviour’ in the gospels?

Our gospel reading for this week, John 4: 3-30-,39-42 includes one of those references. Can you find the second one? In John 4, Jesus and a Samaritan woman meet at a well and discuss ‘living water’. In preparation for worship, read the story of Jesus and Nicodemus in John 3 and note the similarities and differences in Jesus’ encounter with Nicodemus and with the Samaritan woman.

The Worship video is also available from our website.

A Minute For Mission
The attack on the Muslim family in London, Ontario, has saddened all of us. What would compel someone to drive a truck into this family out for a Sunday evening walk? The police believe that the family was targeted because they are Muslim. A 2017 study found that almost half of all Canadians have an unfavourable view of Islam, a perception evident in attitudes toward religious clothing. This study found that while 88 percent of Canadians support a nun wearing a habit, just 32 percent approve of a person wearing the niqab.
The United Church of Canada is deeply committed to working with Muslims and others for peace and justice. That’s why your Mission & Service gifts help us as a church to develop statements and educational resources to combat prejudice and discrimination. Members of Peninsula United are faithful givers to Mission & Service and to date in 2021 have contributed $34,617.06. These funds can help raise awareness and understanding that in turn contribute to a more peaceful world.

Strategic Leadership Committee (SLC) Congregation Update
The SLC meeting was held on Wednesday June 23, 2021, on Zoom. The highlights of the meeting were:
  • Council was advised that Rev. Bruce McAndless-Davis had accepted a call to Gilmore Park United Church in Richmond and was requesting a change in pastoral relations. Council expressed their appreciation for Bruce’s years of service at First United and Peninsula United Church and his dedication to Third Space and wished him all the best at Gilmore Park. Council agreed that Rev. Bruce’s last day with Peninsula will be September 15, 2021, with flexibility to leave earlier if required. A farewell event will be planned.

  • Refugee Application: Kathy Booth, representing the Refugee Sponsorship Team, explained that the Kootenay Refugees Coalition was the sole sponsor of the Eritrean family and PUC was the “Appointment of Representative”, as approved at the last SLC meeting. However, the United Church of Canada does not support the use of the “Appointment of Representatives”. Kathy requested PUC become sole sponsor

  • Rev. David Boyd and Refugee Advisor, Khwaka Kubuko, support an application by PUC for sole sponsorship of this family. Nelson United will provide $10,000 to help support PUC. It was also noted additional costs for housing of $5,000 may be incurred.

  • Council approved the application for sole sponsorship of the Eritrean family and increased the Budget to $45,000 from $40,000. Donations are already coming in from members of the congregation.

  • The first ‘FutureThink Communique’ went out in June by mail and email. The second will go out about the middle of July. The congregation is asked to watch for future communications.

  • The Music and Worship (A/V) Needs Assessment Group have been working hard and have extended our AV production contract until the end of September and an alternative accompanist has been identified and will be on call. The second part of their report will be available by the end of June.
  • Third Space discussion of staffing and leadership were discussed following Rev. Bruce’s departure as well as the lease arrangements as requested by the owner.

  • Thanks were extended to Peter Jones, Joan Strutt and Sylvia Uhreen, who are leaving the SLC, for their good and faithful Leadership to the Congregation.

  • Nominations Committee, Anna Paton, Jean Macdonald, and Janice Young, expressed appreciation for the many conversations with people willing to offer their gifts of ministry and service as nominees for the slate being presented for the upcoming June 27, 2021, Congregational Meeting.
Financial Snapshot at June 30, 2021
At the midpoint of our fiscal year, local offerings of $125,644 were below budget by $11,856 and lower than the same time period in 2020 by $5,708.
Rental income is on budget.
Federal wage grants of $30,807 have been received in 2021.
An amount of $45,630 has been taken from the Planned Gift Fund to cover year to date operating expenses.
Thank you for your ongoing financial support of the various Peninsula United Ministries.
In Person Worship: Are we or aren’t we?
With covid-related restrictions easing, you may be wondering what Peninsula UC’s plans are for re-opening in-person worship at the Crescent site. Right now, it seems that we’ll continue to do our pre-recorded worship services and have live Zoom coffee hours for the rest of the summer.
Here’s why:
  • The Needs Assessment Group (Glenn Roy, Victoria Jones, Carol Monaghan, Leisa Bannerman and John Leighton) has produced an extensive report on our options for hybrid in-person/online worship moving forward, in order to serve our members and guests the best way we can.
  • The Strategic Leadership Council (SLC) will review the report and make a decision on it at their meeting in late July. Should the SLC decide to go with the options explored, it will take several weeks to acquire equipment, train volunteers, etc. During that period, as far as we know at this point, we’ll maintain the current status quo.
If you have comments or concerns about re-opening under the current recommendations from the province, please forward them to any of the SLC members: Jean Macdonald, Anna Paton, Colleen Dean, Beth Henderson, Maria Booth, Pat Heslop, Sharon Birney or Val Austring.
In the meantime, we hope you’ll continue to watch our pre-recorded services online and call in to the Sunday morning Zoom coffee hours. You may also want to take in Café Church Al Fresco, which will be presented in-person every two weeks over the summer in a park setting. Check your newsletters for further details and to pre-register.
Stay tuned – as you know, things change unexpectedly! Rest assured that we’ll let you know how they affect our community of faith and our worship.

We are searching for a location for the Peninsula UC Community Dinners.
Once we have received the Government approval to begin hosting dinners we need a place where we can serve these nutritious and delicious meals to those in the Community. Donna Roy is reaching out to the community for a new home for the dinners.

We welcome your questions and prayers.
