Ash Wednesday Service

March 5th, 2025 - 7 pm

Stone, Water, and Ash. These are the earthly materials we will be using in our children friendly Ash Wednesday service. It is a special service that marks the beginning of Lent, where we spend 5 weeks journeying with Christ to the Cross, ending in an Easter Resurrection. We hope you will join us for this spiritual experience on March 5 at 7 pm at Saint James' Episcopal Church.

Season of Lent

Sharing some peace and calm.

On Wednesday Evenings, starting March 12- April 16 at 7 pm, you are invited to share 30 minutes with Rev. Stacy for a time of music, reflection, and prayer from the comfort of your home.

Please share the Zoom link with your family and friends who are looking for a little soul healing during Lent.

Coffee Hour Conversations

Dreaming our Future

We will continue our Coffee Hour Conversations on March 9th. We've asked the congregation to engage with our facility as if they've never been to Saint James' before. What things might be needed to provide some ease of use, whether it be signage, social media, and even liturgy. We are not asking for big changes, just ease of use. Hopefully there will be time to talk about the possible hidden communities in Dexter that we can support.

How do we make St. James' more accessible?

2025 Lenten Alms Project:

The Church at Crossroads

Alms are monetary (or other gifts) collected to be distributed to the poor. Our Alms will be collected and given to The Church at Crossroads

In 2024 St. James’ collected over $750.00 in Alms, all gratefully accepted by Crossroads. It is another way to show our support of a continuing relationship with the programs of The Church at Crossroads: Sunday Services, Sunday Soup Kitchen program, summer lunch programs, Parent Circle mentoring, and vacation bible school.

Jackie Shock shares,

"In my conversation with Teresa Wakeen it was revealed that this year the programs offered at Crossroads are even more precarious than ever, as the grants used to support this vital community are all under review and in this new climate there is no guarantee the grants will be forthcoming."

Lent 2025

March 5th through April 17th.

These offerings will be collected in a special box during church and coffee hour.

You can certainly make a one-time contribution via check or on-line giving if you prefer. Please make sure to note: Lenten Alms

If you can participate, we are asking families to contribute

  • $1.00 (or more!) for each day of Lent.

We are asking our children to contribute

  • one penny (or more!) for each day of Lent.

*RESOLVED, that the 189th Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan calls each congregation in this diocese to prayerfully consider engaging in a focused campaign to encourage its members to give alms for a particular time (be it the weekdays of Lent, the Fridays of the year, or another period, such as a fast in preparation for another major feast), collect them in a box designated for the ministry of The Church at Crossroads, and transmit those funds to The Episcopal Diocese of MI (who oversees its finances) with a notation For The Church at Crossroads to support its Ministry.

We know how appreciative The Church at the Crossroads will be for our help and support.

Virtual Camino Journey

Many of you have heard of Camino de Santiago. It is the pilgrimage path that travels along the border of France and Spain. It is considered a journey for the soul.

For the season of Lent the Coffee and Conversations Committee is challenging those who can, to do a "virtual Camino journey" by walking. This is not just a physical exercise. Meditative walking is as valuable as meditative sitting.

  • We pay attention to the rhythm of our movement.
  • We focus on each step as it touches the earth.
  • We pray while we move.
  • We listen for sounds of nature.
  • We observe the small changes of nature through the season, as we move towards Easter.

The Coffee and Conversation Committee will provide local maps with a variety of paths to choose from, or you can choose your own favorite walking path. Even a simple walk down the street and back can be of value.

If you cannot walk, any form of movement will work. Giving thanks for those parts of ourselves we can move and connecting with the sacred space we call home.

Bible Study

Wednesdays - 11:15 AM

in the church library.

We continue the close study of the Gospel According to Matthew and during Lent will emphasize beginning of the earthly end of the ministry of Jesus.

Next meeting on March 5th

We will conclude this study with a retreat in the church building on Holy Saturday, April 19th. This 2 hour or so event will offer quiet, a peaceful time with God, readings, some music and prayer and a way to make the transition to Easter and the following fifty days.
