Highlights of Our Life and Work
October 8, 2021

This Sunday we will be coming to worship in-person at the Crescent site at 10 am. A recorded version of the morning worship will be available later in the day on our YouTube channel.
Worship this Week
Sunday Worship - October 10, 2021
Thanksgiving Sunday

Today is Thanksgiving Sunday, when our weekly action of thanksgiving and praise converges with a national holiday and cultural celebration of the harvest season. Demonstrating our gratitude is our primary task every Sunday - and even more so on this day. May God deepen our gratitude and may we respond in our lives with our own generosity.

Join us at the Crescent site at 10am
The worship video will be available here by Sunday evening. It is also available from our website.
Thanksgiving Flowers

The fall display of flowers at the Crescent site is donated by Harvey and Fae Manchuk.

We are happy to be able to worship together in person once again.
We will continue to ask people to pre-register for each Sunday Worship service, sending the registration form out each Wednesday, and using a wait list when we reach capacity. You can register right up until Saturday evening. If you get the wait list alert and space opens up you will be contacted by Saturday evening. After the office closes Friday at noon please use worship@peninsulaunited.com so Victoria Jones can receive cancellations and answer any questions you may have.

To make it easier for people to find appropriate seating, while following the SLC approved Safety Plan, we will try lowering the number of people for services going forward. We will monitor the numbers weekly and make adjustments to the pre-registration numbers as needed.

We value the physical and spiritual well-being of all who enter our buildings for worship. We value caring for one another as Jesus taught us. We trust that each of us will follow Jesus' command to "love our neighbour as yourself" by adhering to these temporary measures that we prayerfully offer for this time.
  • We will not ask people to publicly declare their vaccination status. However, we ask that those who come to in-person worship be fully vaccinated.
  • If you are unwell with a fever, chills and/or a cough or sore throat, please stay home until you are feeling better.
  • Please wear a mask when you are in the church.
  • The greeters will welcome you at a table in the covered entryway and invite you to sanitize your hands and sign in. Those who are joining us in the sanctuary for the first time ever will be directed to the guest book table to receive a special welcome.
  • The little wooden church offering receptacle will be on a table in the narthex for those who wish to deposit an offering envelope.
  • Please wait for ushers to direct you to seating areas. Please give yourself and others space as you move through the sanctuary and when you are seated. You have your choice of being in the on-camera area or the camera free zone for those who do not wish to be on the video.
  • The Balcony will be reserved for those who are unable to wear a mask for extended periods due to medical conditions and for those who have scent allergies.
  • The minister leading worship will direct you regarding humming or singing the hymns as they are being sung by our designated, masked singers in the choir loft.
  • All of us who are offering leadership in worship today have been fully vaccinated
  • No coffee will be served at our worship services for the time being. You are welcome to visit in the parking lot before and after worship.

At this time, we encourage those who are not vaccinated to join us for worship through the recorded service, which will be available on YouTube as soon as possible, hopefully sometime Sunday afternoon.
Due to the increased risks with the variants and schools opening, we encourage families with children under the age of 12, who cannot be vaccinated, to come to Wild Church (outdoors) instead of coming to the Crescent Site.
Name Tags
Now that we are once again worshipping together in person, we would like to remind everyone to wear their name tags. If you do not have a name tag, one can be ordered for $7 (pin-on style) or $10 (magnetic style) from either the Guest Book Hostess on Sunday or from the Church Office during the week.
We're Back!
After so many months we’re happy to welcome you back to the office TWO days a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting in October.

You can continue to call the office (604-531-2979) at the posted hours as usual for our staff, but now you can drop into the office if you need to pick up or drop off items.

It’s still best to contact our ministers and arrange meeting times, however you might find one or both in the office when you drop by. You can check which days they’re expecting to be in the office. We’re still working out what works for everyone.

If you have a key, the usual building access procedures are in place for pick up of your mail or arranged items.

*Standard posted Covid protocols continue.

Now that the fall harvest is in…

we can give ourselves to the winter months when earth rests. Our bodies will be sustained through the time of hibernation, but what of our souls? What sustenance will we choose for the season when the ancient ones call us into the world where story, myth and poetry are a sustaining power? Let’s take time to gather poems to take with us into the winter. Let’s follow the threads of five themes and see which poets emerge as our guides for these colder months. Let’s prepare to be surprised by the poetic instincts that rise in us when we take time to read poetry, share insights, and gather words for winter. Everyone is welcome – no previous participation in poetry groups is required.
Poems for each Tuesday evening will be sent out ahead of each session.

The cost for five sessions via Zoom is $195. Online pass holders pay $0.00 for this course (price included in purchase of pass, maximum two guests)

 Ages: 18+
Tim Scorer is one of four program mentors in Pacific Jubilee SoulGuiding - a two-year experiential learning program in the growth of Spirit, the love of soul, and the art of spiritual direction. For 24 years, Tim was on the program staff at Naramata Centre and he has continued to offer program leadership at the Centre since he left in 2003. He pursues the mystery of life in his family life – now with five grandchildren – in his garden on Bowen Island, in contemplative practice, in his participation in the life of St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church, and in the adventures of cultural exploration he takes with his wife, Donna.
Lessons from previous virus pandemics, such as smallpox and polio, have taught us that none of us are safe unless vaccines are readily accessible worldwide. Please consider making a donation to this campaign against COVID-19 as an act of compassion and justice for all:

Email Phishing
Please only trust personal staff emails that come from @peninsulaunited.com

Staff emails from other extensions (ie @gmail, @hotmail) may be email phishing.

“Phishing is a type of online scam where criminals impersonate legitimate organizations via email, text message, advertisement or other means in order to steal sensitive information.” – from Webroot.com

If you receive an email from one of our staff members that seems unusual or suspicious — like staff asking for cash, gift cards or Bitcoin - it is probably a scam.

We encourage you to report any spam emails to Google – it does actually make a difference. You are always welcome to contact the Peninsula United Church Office directly (DO NOT reply to the suspect email) to check the legitimacy of any email that you receive.
Request For Volunteers
The Worship Committee is looking for a few volunteers to help out with the weekly AV productions on Sunday mornings. As we move forward with publishing our services online, it means we need a few more hands on deck to help with these tasks. Don't worry, previous computer experience is not required, just a curious mind and a willingness to learn. One Sunday per month is all we are asking.
Just imagine the bragging rights you'll have over your grandkids!
Sounds Interesting? Contact Glenn Roy or Teri Lydiard.
will be meeting October 28, 2021 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Narthex at the Crescent Site. The book for October is The Road to Character by David Brooks. Contact person is Carol Vance, 604-594-3113. The Covid guidelines will be followed.
The Gifts of Imperfection
This 12-week study takes its name from the book by Brené Bown: The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are. Brown is a well-known writer and research professor who has brought her work in the areas of shame, authenticity and belonging to the general public through her popular Tedx talks, many books and television appearances. In this contemplative learning experience, we will weave Brown’s book together with Biblical texts, theological reflection, and some of the big questions many of us find ourselves facing these days, such as: What can we do to help? How do I find purpose for my life? In the face of the climate crisis, where is hope? How do we see and live God’s blessings and grace in complex and divisive times? How can we let go of our own agendas and truly feel the presence of God? What does it mean to be the church now and how do we do that?
The study will be offered twice:
  •  in person - on Thursdays at the Sunnsyide site, from 3:30 - 5 pm (in accordance with COVID-19 safety protocols)
  • on Zoom - on Thursday evenings from 7-8:30 pm
The course starts October 28. Please contact Scott if you would like to participate in this learning opportunity.

We are now preparing for the upcoming homeless season in our community.
The new space we have is much smaller than last years, so we can only store very specific items.
Currently we are needing: Warm Weatherproof men’s winter coats, NEW: Men’s Boxer Underwear, Men’s Warm crew length Socks, and Weatherproof gloves.
To receive your donations I will be in Mount Olive Church parking lot, 2350 148th Street on Wednesday at 9:30 am. – 11:30 .(a Red Rogue).
If you prefer to give a financial donation, we can shop for you. Please make your cheque payable to Peninsula United Church with a note in the memo section for EWS.

Thanksgiving Appeal
One in nine people around the world will go to bed hungry tonight. You can help! This Thanksgiving, support those who are hungry by making a gift through Mission & Service. Your generosity not only provides food in emergency situations, it also transforms families and communities for generations. Check out Emmanuel Baya’s amazing story.
The Nitelights are once again collecting toiletries to distribute to Atira Women`s Resource Society. There will be a box labelled “Toiletries” placed in the Narthex of the church and also on the back patio at Val Weinerts.  Please feel free to place any donations you might want to contribute in either box.

Tip: The back to school teen boxes of toiletries are now available at Shoppers Drug Mart. They contain many useful items and on Thursdays can be purchased by seniors for 20% off.

Any questions please phone Val Weinert 604-536-6576.

Wild Church - Sunday, Oct 17 at 2 pm.
Semiahmoo Fish & Game Club (1284 184th St. Surrey)
Rev. Janice invites you to join us for Wild Church on the third Sunday of each month. Wild Church is similar to Cafe Church al Fresco. We will gather in local parks to experience the wisdom and presence of God in creation and to practice seeing all of creation as our neighbours. Check out the cover story in the Oct/Nov issue of Broadview Magazine to learn more about Wild Church.

This is a family friendly worship experience. We really hope that the young families and children of the congregation will come and join us. Bring your suggestions for where we might gather for Wild Church on October 17. Dress for the weather.
