A Note From Phil

Temptation. We all face it. We have all failed at beating it.  Why are we tempted? Why do we give in?  Sometimes it is just the easy thing to do. We seek the selfish way, the path with the least resistance. The world says get it now. Get what you can.  God says that His way is the best way and that includes sacrifice.  Sacrifice means that we go without or we give up something or we go the extra mile. Sacrifice is a key ingredient to love. We love our kids and make sacrifices for them. A good marriage relationship is an example of mutual sacrifice as well. So how should we deal with temptation?  It's not easy. Let's look at Jesus as our example. He was tempted by Satan after fasting for 40 days. His ammunition against Satan's temptation was quoting scripture. Satan tempted Jesus to use the power that he had for instant gratification for food, for instant way out of His suffering, and for instant gratification for anything in this world.  Jesus knew that Heaven had way more than this earthly world can offer and chose to follow God's way. The biggest trial that Jesus faced was His crucifixion.  Before he got arrested, He got together with 3 of His disciples to pray.

Luke 22: 39-46 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow."Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation."

Jesus encourages His disciples to pray that they will not fall into temptation. But Jesus Himself is going through a trial of His own. He knows what is coming and it is a lot to bare. He was so burdened with it that He was sweating blood. But even then He prays not my will, but yours be done. Jesus beat temptation and sought the Will of God during His tough trials. Even more than that Jesus defeated Sin and Death by going to the cross and being raised from the dead. He has the victory. So if we are searching for a way to conquer temptation, that Way is Jesus. Jesus became Lord over Sin and Death. He has defeated it all. If we recognize Him as Lord of our lives, Lord over sin and death, and humbly kneel before Him and serve Him, He will enable us to overcome our temptations and sins and fight along side of us through the trials of our lives.

Have a great week!
Phil
