President's Message:
As we approach the end of Pesach, I would like to wish you a belated Chag Sameach, hoping that your Seders were meaningful and joyous. I also would like to thank Vice President Andy Gavens for stepping up to the plate and fulfilling various presidential responsibilities effectively while I was abroad on vacation.
This week we lost a very dear and active member of our congregation, Mona Feingold. Mona attended services regularly, supported Women's Network and several adult education programs, and volunteered in various capacities at the shul. Mona was thoughtful and caring, and touched many congregants with her uplifting spirit and kind gestures. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to express our deepest condolences to the Feingold and Parrent families for their loss. Mona will be sorely missed.
On a positive note, I would like to remind you of our upcoming Community of Jewish Writers program this Sunday, April 15, at 2 p.m., where nine accomplished writers will share their poetry and prose in their own voice. If you have literary inclinations, you may not want to miss the opportunity to listen to the Jewish themes that permeate the writings of these talented writers. In the fall, our congregation received a gold award from the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism in the category of adult education for launching this program in 2010. A reception will follow this event, which is free and open to the community.
The featured writers are: Susan Comninos, a journalist and award-winning poet; Terry Bat-Sonja, a writer from South Africa; Marea Gordett, winner of the Pushcart Prize award and awardee of three Artist-in-Residence fellowships in three states; Joseph Krausman, a former English and theater university professor; Tina Lincer, Associate Director of Communications at Union College whose work has been published in various anthologies, poetry magazines and newspapers; Marlene Newman, who recently published her first poetry book; Sue Oringel, an award-winning writer, poet, and teacher of creative writing at HVCC; Joanne Seltzer, our poet-in-residence and a widely published author whose work has appeared in literary journals and anthologies; and Henry Tedeschid, a cell biologist and author of two editions of a cell biology textbook who currently writes fiction. Mr. Tedeschid has published seven books of short stories and two mysteries.
Please join us and enjoy a unique Sunday afternoon. This program would not have been possible without the dedication of poet Leslie Neustadt, who solicited writers' submissions and coordinated the review and selection process for our third Community of Jewish Writers anniversary. Leslie also worked closely with Linda Woodward Stein of the Programming Committee and Jack Mintzer, Director of Education and Programming. Our gratitude to all those who were involved in this endeavor.
Shabbat Shalom!
