COMMUNITY STORM AND POWER UPDATE
The Charlevoix area is slowly getting powered back up! Thank you to all who continue to work tirelessly to get us going. Remember many are still without power. Emergency crews and power crews are still busy and need our support in letting them do their jobs safely and efficiently.
BE PATIENT with businesses as they open back up and assess their availability of product, services, staffing, etc. Business owners had another layer of stress during this time, caring for their own families and also their businesses. What they need now is supportive patrons!
And let's BE THANKFUL. Now, to those who opened their doors to provide whatever service they could the last 5 days and to those who are opening today to provide what they are able to. And over the next few days, to those who need some more time to assess an opening plan and will be ready to serve us soon.
STORM AND SAFETY REMINDERS
-
Be aware of scammers: Scammers often prey on those in need of cleanup services during times like these. Be cautious of unsolicited clean-up services especially with up-front payment demands or those using pressure tactics. Ask for references or check with organizations like The Chamber for reputable businesses.
- Carbon monoxide poisoning and death are some of the biggest dangers in a storm like this. Do not run generators or outdoor heating elements indoors. It’s always a good time to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Check whether you left any appliances, lights, and other electronic items on to ensure they are safe when power is restored.
- Limit travel and watch for falling branches, ice, and downed power lines. Assume any wire is live.
- Do not pass emergency vehicles, electric crews, or barriers.
- Lake Charlevoix EMS is available for medical issues and emergencies, including low oxygen levels.
WARMING LOCATIONS
- Charlevoix Area Community Pool - hot showers, free (donations welcome)
- Community Reformed Church - shelter and food until 5pm today (Thursday)
- The Charlevoix Township Northside Fire Station - shelter 24/7

Online Non-Profit Boot Camp for Board Members and Executive Directors
April 16th
Are you part of a Board of Directors that has "challenges"?
Are you a newly elected Board Member or newly hired Executive Director and you are not sure what you are supposed to do?
Does your organization need to learn how to recruit new people for the future?
Do you want to make your Non-Profit Organization or Association the best and most high functioning that it can be?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then this class is for you!
Join Certified Association Executive and Non-Profit Organizational Management Specialist, Scott Herceg, MSML, CAE, as he guides you through the best practices, industry standards and useful experience that have helped him successfully lead award winning, non-profits and membership based organizations for over 20 years.
Whether you are brand-new to non-profit work, or if you are an experienced veteran, there is something in this series of classes for everyone to take back to their organization that will make it better.
Sessions 1 & 2 - The 5 M’s of Association Management and Non-Profit Administration©
Basic Training for anyone (Staff or Volunteer) involved with a Non-Profit Organization or Membership Based Association. Money, Membership, Management, Marketing, and Mission are the building blocks of any non-profit organization or association. Everything your organization does should be based on properly and effectively using these 5 key elements and the best practices that go with them. Understand the 5 M’s and your organization will be successful.
Session 3 - Board Development and Governance
Essential for any member of a Board of Directors or Staff of a Non-Profit Organization. Learn what it takes to be an outstanding Board Member or Executive Director of a High Functioning Board. Explore the Do’s and Don’ts of Board Operations and learn how to implement them for your board.
Session 4 - Budget Development/Management/Growth
If we are a non-profit organization, that means we aren’t supposed to make any money, right? WRONG! To help your organization and your mission be sustainable into the future, organization leaders need to learn how to build a healthy budget, keep it that way and then grow it. Topics explored include non-profit accounting basics, financial reporting that every board member can read, benchmarks for good budgeting, templates for profitable program and event production, how to plan for the future, and how to properly file your financial reports today
Session 5 - Membership Growth/Management/Retention
If your organization is not growing, you are dying! It’s as simple as that…well, sort of. Learn how to evaluate the health of your organization and your programing through membership trends. Explore techniques for gaining new members while engaging your current members in a positive way. It is always easier to keep a member than recruit a new one. This class will dive into the importance of good member relations and how to best keep them engaged and renewing year after year. Topics covered include: value propositions, why join statements, market penetration, quality “onboarding” procedures, new member’s 1st year or aka “I just joined, now what?," membership standards, and legal issues related to membership that could sink your organization if you are not careful.
Session 6 - Everybody is an Asset
How to properly use your nominating committee to grow your board strength and your organization's capacity for success. Learn how your organization can get the right people in the right positions, doing the right jobs for the right reasons. Topics include proper nominating committee procedures, how to encourage diversity in thoughts and demographics, why a good orientation for board members and new staff is so important, and the life cycle of a volunteer and staff… do they burn out, flame out, or heroically ride off into the sunset as the credits roll. Also, Staff, Board of Directors, or Committees...just who is responsible for each thing anyway?
Session 7 - Executive Director & Board Chairperson Coaching
Whatever the titles are: Executive Director, President, Board Chairperson, Executive Officer or just Leader. The top people, staff and volunteer need to fully understand their role in the organization and why the importance of that role functioning smoothly has a great influence on the rest of the organization's operations. Learn how the roles for the top staff person (Chief Staff Executive) and the top volunteer leader (Chief Elected Officer) work in tandem for the good of the organization but how they also have very different responsibilities. Other topics covered will include preparation for board meetings, agenda building, board management best practices, and how to conduct a smooth flowing board meeting that gets stuff done.
Registrations are non-refundable within 48 hours of the first session.

Tom Ervin to Transition from Role as President of Walstrom Marine
Will Remain as Strategic Advisor
Walstrom Marine, Michigan’s leading full-service marine dealership, announced today that Tom Ervin has decided to transition from his role as president. He plans to stay actively involved with the company as a strategic advisor, supporting its continued growth.
With a career devoted to the marine industry, including over 20 years managing national marine organizations, Tom has brought decades of experience, passion, and leadership to Walstrom Marine. Since taking the helm in 2016, he has guided the company through remarkable growth, expanding its brand portfolio, services, and geographic reach across Michigan. His leadership was instrumental in key acquisitions, including Traverse Bay Marine and Grand Bay Marine in Traverse City, as well as Algonac Harbour Club on Lake St. Clair.
“Tom has made such a large impact on our family’s business. He helped transform Walstrom Marine while keeping intact our values and culture of putting our customers first,” said Ward Walstrom Jr., second-generation owner of Walstrom Marine. “I will remember Tom most for his servant leadership. If he’s not grilling hamburgers at an employee luncheon, then he’s out delivering a customer’s boat.”
Walstrom Marine is committed to finding the right leader to continue its legacy of customer service and employee care. Tom will remain in his role until the right successor is in place, ensuring a smooth transition.
“Tremendous opportunities lie ahead for Walstrom Marine. We envision growing our dealership and marina footprint within Michigan and the Great Lakes, organically and via acquisition,” said Mike Cazer, CEO of Continuum Ventures, an investor in Walstrom Marine. “We look forward to finding the next leader to help us steward the business and realize its full potential. We are grateful for Tom’s service and that he will remain with us to support the transition and advise us in our next chapter of growth.”
Walstrom Marine was founded in 1946 by Ward Walstrom Sr. and Paul Griffeth when they acquired Melching Garage and Boat Works in Harbor Springs. Since then, Walstrom Marine has grown into a leading marine group in Michigan, offering sales, service, storage, and marina facilities across nine locations throughout the state.

Events on International Day will support Mexico Field Studies students
North Central Michigan College is gearing up for a vibrant International Day celebration on Wednesday, April 16, packed with culture, conversation, food, and film — all in support of students participating in the college’s Mexico Field Studies trip this May.
Everyone’s invited — students, community members, and guests — to take part in a variety of events that highlight global cultures while helping students fund their educational travel experience. Events at a glance are:
Bake Sale - 8:30 – 10 a.m. | Borra Learning Center Lobby
Start your day with a sweet treat! Students heading to Mexico will be selling homemade baked goods, with all proceeds going toward their travel expenses.
Coffee & Connect - 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. | Room 122, Borra Learning Center
Enjoy coffee and conversation with an inspiring couple whose careers have spanned the globe. Ambassador Tom Miller is a seasoned U.S. diplomat who served as ambassador to Greece and Bosnia and Herzegovina. With a career spanning nearly three decades in the Foreign Service, he’s been at the forefront of international diplomacy. Bonnie Miller is an educator, consultant, and passionate advocate whose global work has focused on social justice, refugee support, anti-trafficking efforts, and youth empowerment.
Together, the Millers have led impactful lives dedicated to diplomacy, education, and humanitarian change.
International Food Fair - 12 – 2 p.m. | Iron Horse Café
Taste the world! Enjoy a global buffet created by the college’s culinary team. $5 for students/$10 for community members. All proceeds go toward helping students cover the cost of their Mexico Field Studies experience.
Movie & Panel Discussion - 4 – 7 p.m. | Room 122, Borra Learning Center
Watch the thrilling South Korean action-horror film Train to Busan (Rated R), followed by a thought-provoking panel discussion. The 2016 hit blends social commentary with gripping action — and zombies — making it the perfect springboard for conversation. The panel discussion, led by history and movie club students and Blake Morley, will follow the movie.
This daylong celebration supports students enrolled in Mexico Field Studies, a 3-credit hour course that fulfills a social science requirement. Led by Professors Kerri Finlayson and Joe Leestma, the class will travel to Mexico from May 14–24, exploring topics like Aztec archaeology, the art of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and the country’s rich political and culinary history.
“Please join us in celebrating the vibrant connections between people, food, culture, and film, all coming together to honor the spirit of global connection, states NCMC professor, Kerri Finlayson. “As NCMC students raise funds for their interdisciplinary field studies class to Mexico, we celebrate the transformative impact that travel can have in broadening hearts and minds.”

Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital Earns 2025 Best Hospitals in the U.S. for Obstetrics
Women’s Choice Health releases top hospitals in U.S. list
Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital was recently named as a best hospital for obstetrics by The Women’s Choice Award for Best Hospitals™.
With healthcare awards spanning multiple service lines, the Women’s Choice Award for Best Hospitals™ is a credential that identifies the nation’s best hospitals based on robust criteria that includes relevant clinical performance, patient satisfaction and appropriate accreditations.
"We are incredibly fortunate to have highly skilled, board-certified OB/GYN physicians and dedicated nurses who provide exceptional care to women across northern Michigan. Our fine staff and beautiful setting make the maternity care and childbirth experience truly personal and special,” said Joanne Schroeder, Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital president.
Award determinations are completed by using publicly available information from The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), as well as accreditation information from appropriate sources. Thousands of women were surveyed to determine which measures are most important to them which is factored into the weighting on those items.
Munson Medical Center in Traverse City was also named a best hospital for obstetrics.

C3F Focuses on Student Success with Grants to Local Schools
In communities across Charlevoix County, schools provide students with a nurturing place for learning and growing. In addition to engaging activities, challenging concepts, and valuable extra-curricular experiences, schools are increasingly providing food and clothing or support navigating post-secondary career paths. With dedicated school personnel as their partners, the Charlevoix County Community Foundation (C3F) and their donors remove barriers to learning as well as increase opportunities for students to achieve through Student Success grants.
C3F partners with school leaders to offer strategic support to make a difference where tax support can't. Student Success grants are available to schools across Charlevoix County including Beaver Island, Boyne City, Boyne Falls, Charlevoix, and East Jordan. Recent grants had a huge impact on each school’s ability to provide engaging opportunities and encourage students to become successful community citizens.
In Boyne City, a recent grant supported “Where Everybody Belongs,” a mentoring and transition program which offers training, games, and bonding events between 8th grade mentors and 5th graders. This helps make the transition from elementary to middle school easier for students and can even eliminate bullying by bringing students together. This program also builds dynamic youth leaders. One former 8th grade mentor has now become a member of the C3F Youth Advisory Committee representing Boyne City.
In Charlevoix, grant dollars supported the completion of the putting the T in STEM program, to bring more expansive technology equipment to K-6th grade classes. They purchased a 3D printer, Dash Robots, and Code and Go Robots to practice computational thinking, design thinking, coding, programming, and problem solving. In addition, recent Student Success grants also supported purchasing physical education air bikes for the school gym and sensory exploration bins for the Little Rayders program which enriches early education learning through hands-on sensory exploration for their youngest students. Sensory exploration includes the use of thoughtfully curated, interesting, and engaging items that are put together for independent investigation by young students such as the Button Bin which teaches sorting, comparing, and counting, and the Aquarium Bin which fosters discovery, creativity, language, and calming.
In East Jordan, a grant supported reestablishing the EJPS Drama Program so they could put on a theater production for the entire community for the first time in 13 years. To produce quality shows, the program needed to upgrade equipment such as wireless body microphones and stage monitors to allow performers to hear the music. Their first production, the musical “Finding Nemo,” has sparked more interest from students and the program has a goal of producing both a fall and spring production each year.
The Charlevoix County Community Foundation accepts gifts of all sizes and for many purposes. Those contributions are professionally managed to generate income that is used to make grants supporting worthwhile programs, projects, and initiatives right here at home. Currently, more than 328 separate funds make up the Community Foundation, each one created by an individual, family, business, or nonprofit agency. With assets of over $64 million, the Community Foundation has made grants totaling more than $39 million since 1992.
For more information about the Charlevoix County Community Foundation, or to find out how to support a Student Success Fund for Beaver Island, Boyne Falls, Boyne City, Charlevoix, or East Jordan, contact the Foundation office at (231) 536-2440 or visit the organization’s website at www.c3f.org.
