Trailblazing Women of Country
March 27th
Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly Parton revolutionized country music and paved the way for future generations of female artists. With their chart-topping hits and record-breaking sales, these icons infused contemporary womanhood into the fabric of country music, leading to unprecedented commercial success and earning each of them a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
"Trailblazing Women of Country" will entertain and inspire audiences during this pivotal moment in our nation's history. The performance will feature soloists, including GRAMMY® nominee Rissi Palmer and Nashville-based singer Kristina Train, supported by an all-female band consisting of five members.
Cline, Lynn, and Parton harnessed country music’s rich storytelling tradition to express their uniquely empowered— and unmistakably female—perspective on the challenges faced by women of their time. Their shared legacy of musical excellence, earthy glamour, and unapologetic authenticity continues to resonate with listeners of all ages and backgrounds in the 21st century.
Patsy’s assured contralto affirms that a woman can feel heartbroken and yet be sure of herself at the same time, as demonstrated in songs like “Crazy” and “Walkin’ After Midnight.” Loretta Lynn’s music celebrates autonomy gained through contraception in “The Pill” and self-respect in “Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind).” Dolly Parton illustrates that a woman can climb the career ladder with songs like “9-to-5” while never losing sight of her roots in “Coat of Many Colors.”
Through their singular voices and artistry, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly Parton defied restrictive gender norms, proving that women can embody beauty and strength, vulnerability and power.

Munson Reminds Community the Importance of Colorectal Screenings
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and Munson Healthcare is encouraging community members to get screened.
Worldwide, Colon Cancer is the third most common form of cancer and second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. In Northern Michigan, colorectal cancer rates are 4-5 percent higher than the Michigan average. Additionally, research shows around 60 percent of the cases north of US-10 are detected in late-stages which significantly diminishes the chances of successful treatment and increases the risk of mortality.
“While there are several screening methods available, a colonoscopy is the gold standard due to its unique ability to both detect and treat precancerous or early cancerous lesions called polyps. It also has the benefit of only being needed once every 10 years if you have a normal colonoscopy,” said Ed Hagen, MD, Colorectal Surgeon at Munson Medical Center.
The American Cancer Society recommends that individuals at average risk for colorectal cancer begin screening at age 45. If you have a family history or certain genetic conditions, it is recommended to talk to your primary care provider to determine if earlier and more frequent screening may be necessary.
Since the 1990s, colorectal cancer rates have increased in younger adults. If you are under the age of 50, your chances of being diagnosed have increased by 50 percent over the last three decades. It is important for younger adults, especially those with family history, to be aware of symptoms that could indicate colorectal cancer, including:
- Changes in bowel habits which can include diarrhea, constipation, or a change in the consistency of your stool that lasts for more than a few days.
- Rectal bleeding or blood in stool.
- Persistent abdominal discomfort like cramps, gas, or pain that doesn't go away.
- A feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely.
- Weakness or fatigue.
- Unexplained weight loss.
“Colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable, and beatable,” said Dr. Hagen. “It is important to maintain a healthy weight, engage in regular physical activity, and limit red meat and processed foods. Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains not only reduces the risk of colorectal cancer but the chance of heart attack or stroke as well.”
Avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can also reduce an individual’s risk. Smoking is linked to about 12 percent of colorectal cancer deaths, second only to alcohol consumption which increases the risk of developing colorectal cancer by 9 percent for light drinkers and up to 40 percent for people who have multiple drinks daily.
If you are over the age of 45 or have a family history of colon or rectal cancer, talk to your primary care provider about colorectal cancer screening.

C3F Focuses on Student Success with Grants to Local Schools
In communities across Charlevoix County, schools provide students with a nurturing place for learning and growing. In addition to engaging activities, challenging concepts, and valuable extra-curricular experiences, schools are increasingly providing food and clothing or support navigating post-secondary career paths. With dedicated school personnel as their partners, the Charlevoix County Community Foundation (C3F) and their donors remove barriers to learning as well as increase opportunities for students to achieve through Student Success grants.
C3F partners with school leaders to offer strategic support to make a difference where tax support can't. Student Success grants are available to schools across Charlevoix County including Beaver Island, Boyne City, Boyne Falls, Charlevoix, and East Jordan. Recent grants had a huge impact on each school’s ability to provide engaging opportunities and encourage students to become successful community citizens.
In Boyne City, a recent grant supported “Where Everybody Belongs,” a mentoring and transition program which offers training, games, and bonding events between 8th grade mentors and 5th graders. This helps make the transition from elementary to middle school easier for students and can even eliminate bullying by bringing students together. This program also builds dynamic youth leaders. One former 8th grade mentor has now become a member of the C3F Youth Advisory Committee representing Boyne City.
In Charlevoix, grant dollars supported the completion of the putting the T in STEM program, to bring more expansive technology equipment to K-6th grade classes. They purchased a 3D printer, Dash Robots, and Code and Go Robots to practice computational thinking, design thinking, coding, programming, and problem solving. In addition, recent Student Success grants also supported purchasing physical education air bikes for the school gym and sensory exploration bins for the Little Rayders program which enriches early education learning through hands-on sensory exploration for their youngest students. Sensory exploration includes the use of thoughtfully curated, interesting, and engaging items that are put together for independent investigation by young students such as the Button Bin which teaches sorting, comparing, and counting, and the Aquarium Bin which fosters discovery, creativity, language, and calming.
In East Jordan, a grant supported reestablishing the EJPS Drama Program so they could put on a theater production for the entire community for the first time in 13 years. To produce quality shows, the program needed to upgrade equipment such as wireless body microphones and stage monitors to allow performers to hear the music. Their first production, the musical “Finding Nemo,” has sparked more interest from students and the program has a goal of producing both a fall and spring production each year.
The Charlevoix County Community Foundation accepts gifts of all sizes and for many purposes. Those contributions are professionally managed to generate income that is used to make grants supporting worthwhile programs, projects, and initiatives right here at home. Currently, more than 328 separate funds make up the Community Foundation, each one created by an individual, family, business, or nonprofit agency. With assets of over $64 million, the Community Foundation has made grants totaling more than $39 million since 1992.
For more information about the Charlevoix County Community Foundation, or to find out how to support a Student Success Fund for Beaver Island, Boyne Falls, Boyne City, Charlevoix, or East Jordan, contact the Foundation office at (231) 536-2440 or visit the organization’s website at www.c3f.org.

Munson Healthcare Becomes Partner of The Manna Food Project
Munson Healthcare is proud to announce its commitment as a $5,000 Platinum Harvest Partner with The Manna Food Project, a local nonprofit food bank dedicated to serving Antrim, Charlevoix and Emmet counties in Northern Michigan. This partnership underscores Munson Healthcare's dedication to supporting local communities and addressing food insecurity.
“We are thrilled to support The Manna Food Project in their mission to combat food insecurity in our community,” expressed Joanne Schroeder, President at Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital. “Our team is dedicated to making a positive impact, and we believe that by working together, we can help ensure that no child goes hungry."
The Manna Food Project's mission is to provide nutritious food and access to other resources for anyone facing food insecurity in Northern Michigan. The organization operates a food bank, a food rescue program, a weekly food pantry, and the Food 4 Kids backpack program. The funds from Munson Healthcare will be instrumental in supporting these initiatives, helping to distribute over one million pounds of food annually to more than 40 partner food pantries, community meal sites, and other agencies.
Recently, leaders from Charlevoix Hospital volunteered their time packing food and assembling backpack bags filled with meals and snacks for school-aged children. These backpacks ensure that kids have nourishing food to take home over the weekend, fostering a healthier and happier future for our youth.
"The support from Munson Healthcare is invaluable. The need for emergency food assistance continues to increase in Northern Michigan. These funds will help us continue our efforts to provide nutritious food to those in need and expand our programs to reach even more families. Together, we are making a significant difference in the lives of our neighbors," said Carrie Klingelsmith, Executive Director of The Manna Food Project.
