Charlevoix Cheese Company
Boss Dairy Farms is a small family-owned dairy farm located in Charlevoix, Michigan. Milking 230 Holstein cattle twice daily, our cows are well cared for and produce the highest quality milk. A true farmstead creamery, the farm uses milk exclusively from the herd to produce artisan cheese under the name of Charlevoix Cheese Company.
Baby calves are born on site and nurtured into milking cows with care and compassion. Corn, hay, and soil-improving cover crops are planted and harvested to feed the herd. Over 1800 gallons of premium milk are processed daily using a double-7 herringbone milking parlor. From the parlor, the milk is then transported to the cheese plant via an elevated pipeline, where it is pasteurized and made into cheese within hours of being collected. Cheese recipes are tailored to fit the farm’s feed, cattle breed and production system and develop a flavor signature that is unique to Charlevoix Cheese Company.

Walloon Wildflower Walk
May 3rd
Join CAKE CISMA and the Walloon Lake Association & Conservancy for a peaceful hike at one of our favorite spots to look for spring wildflowers (aka spring ephemerals). Spring ephemeral flowers are short-lived, blooming after the snow melts but before trees and shrubs leaf out. In a matter of only a few short weeks, they bloom, photosynthesize, reproduce, and enter dormancy.
Guided by CAKE CISMA, we'll unravel the life cycle of these ephemeral beauties, from their brief but spectacular bloom to their crucial role as early-season pollinators for native insects. Learn about their fascinating adaptations, ecological significance, and the role they play in the delicate balance of our natural ecosystems.
This hike is suitable for all ages but includes uneven, hilly terrain and may include muddy sections of the trail.
What should I bring?
- Consider bringing your camera or binoculars
- Dress for the weather! Always check the forecast in advance
- Sunscreen and bug spray for your safety and comfort

Pet of The Week- Brady!
Well hello there, they call me Brady!
I am a hound/lab mix who found my way to the shelter after being transferred from downstate. The early years of my life are pretty unknown, but I don't think I grew up in the best environment, and that has caused me to be fearful of lots of things. New people can freak me out, and I tend to bark when I am scared. I'm also afraid of doorways, walks and loud sounds, I promise I'm trying to work on it and be brave, but the world is pretty scary, especially when you're all alone.
Maybe you could be my emotional support human and we can try new things together and work on me becoming braver?
I do well with most other dogs, but to be honest, I am can be a little frightened by them as well, and I haven't totally figured out this whole playing thing, but I think a companion would really help get me out of my shell. I would likely do well with cats and children, so long as they respected my space.

Little Traverse Conservancy Launches Campaign to Protect 654 Acres
of Northern Michigan Beauty
In the wake of the recent devastating ice storm that damaged trees and disrupted lives across northern Michigan, the importance of protecting and caring for our natural landscapes has never felt more urgent.
That’s why Little Traverse Conservancy (LTC) is launching a campaign to permanently protect 654 acres of land in Charlevoix County. Locally known as “White Mountain,” this extraordinary place features rolling wooded hills, deep forests, and rugged terrain that provide vital wildlife habitat and offer sweeping views of Lake Charlevoix and Boyne City.
“This storm reminded us how powerful nature can be,” said Kieran Fleming, LTC Executive Director, “and it can be incredibly resilient if we take care of it. That’s why it matters to protect the wild places we still have. White Mountain is one of the most significant conservation opportunities in our region, and now is the time to act.”
LTC is calling on the community to help bring this vision to life by donating at landtrust.org/whitemountain. With your support, this land can be safeguarded forever—as a refuge for wildlife, a source of peace and wonder, and a place for future generations to explore and cherish.
How You Can Help
LTC welcomes support from individuals, families, businesses, and foundations. Every donation—large or small—will help protect this land and fund its long-term care. Of the $3 million needed, $2.4 million has already been raised, and LTC has until May 31 to raise the rest.
Your gift will help:
- permanently protect 654 acres in a natural state;
- preserve critical wildlife habitat and forest ecosystems; and
- open the land for future public enjoyment.
“We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to protect this landscape,” said Caitlin Donnelly, LTC Director of Land Protection. “In a time when so much feels uncertain, conserving this land offers something enduring—something we can pass on.”
Join the Effort
To donate or learn more, visit landtrust.org or contact Little Traverse Conservancy at 231. 347.0991.

A Message from the Superintendent: Bond Proposal would invest in Our Schools Without Raising Estimated Millage Above the Current Tax Rate
As superintendent of Charlevoix Public Schools, I want to share important information about a bond proposal that will appear on the upcoming ballot. This proposal would allow the district to borrow up to $8 million to fund a range of critical improvements to our facilities, technology, transportation, and athletic infrastructure, all without increasing estimated millage above the current tax rate.
If approved, the bond would result in an estimated 0.40 mill decrease in the total debt millage from the current 2024 tax rate. The proposed 2025 rate for the proposed bonds is 0.68 mill, with an average annual millage of 0.79 mill for the proposed bonds over a 10-year period.
This proposal is focused on long-term needs that directly impact our students and staff. Key projects include:
Charlevoix Elementary School
Replacement of windows, doors, and vestibules; installation of protective entry canopies
Charlevoix Middle/High School
Renovation of science labs, creation of a welding space, parking lot resurfacing, fire door upgrades
District-Wide Technology
Updates to classroom devices, infrastructure, building security, and network systems
Athletics
Improvements to Kipke Field House lighting and HVAC, press box repairs, and new tennis courts
Transportation
Purchase of new school buses for safer, more reliable student transport
It’s important to note that bond funds are legally restricted and cannot be used for salaries or operational expenses. All funds must be used only for the specific types of projects listed in the proposal and are subject to audit upon completion.
I encourage every member of our community to learn more, ask questions, and most importantly, vote.
For further questions, please contact Mike Ritter at 231-547-8101.

EMMET AND CHARLEVOIX COUNTIES – Emergency mini grants ranging from $500 to $1,500 are available to help small businesses respond to urgent needs resulting from the March 28, 2025 ice storm that led to an emergency declaration by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

“We are grateful for the response of many to this catastrophic storm,” said David Jones, Executive Director of the Petoskey Harbor Springs Community Foundation. “We also know that many small businesses have unmet urgent needs. The purpose of this Emergency Mini Grant program is to quickly provide grants ranging from $500 to $1,500 to help as many small businesses as possible resolve urgent needs and sustain operations.”
“This grant process will be aimed at expediting small grants to small businesses most in need as a result of the March 28 ice storm as we wait for larger aid efforts to get underway,” said Laura Galbraith, President of Venture North. “We have local partners who will review and advise us on approval of each Mini Grant application based on their familiarity with local circumstances and conditions. Once we receive approval, the grant amount will be transferred to the bank of the small business applicant. We will award mini grants until the funds donated for this purpose have been exhausted.”

NCMC ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR COMMENCEMENT, NURSE PINNING CEREMONIES
North Central to celebrate Class of 2025 graduates on May 9
North Central Michigan College will mark the end of another successful academic year with two important ceremonies on May 9.
The college will hold its 65th annual commencement exercises at 7 p.m. inside Petoskey Plastics Arena in the college’s Athletic Center. More than 295 graduates will receive their diplomas. A reception for graduates and guests will follow the ceremony.
“Commencement is a momentous occasion that honors the dedication and perseverance of our graduates,” said NCMC President David Roland Finley. “We are proud to celebrate their achievements and look forward to seeing the impact they will make in their communities and careers.”
Beth LaForest, chief of staff at Livonia’s Schoolcraft College and a proud NCMC alumna, will deliver the commencement address to the Class of 2025.
LaForest brings more than 18 years of experience in higher education leadership. She has worked across multiple areas of community college administration, including facilities management, campus safety, information technology, library services, student housing, strategic planning, finance, and the president’s office.
A strong advocate for the life-changing impact of community colleges, LaForest’s own educational journey began at North Central, where she earned an associate degree in 2008 before obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from Lawrence Technological University and a Master of Business Administration from Ferris State University.
“Within North Central’s walls, I fell in love with community colleges and the important mission they hold — so much so that I never left,” LaForest said. “I was supported by amazing faculty, knowledgeable staff and a vibrancy of student life that allowed me to take risks, learn leadership skills and understand that no door was barred to me. I am unbelievably honored to be invited back to be a part of this momentous occasion for the Class of 2025.”
During the ceremony, college officials will award honorary degrees of Community Service to Stafford Smith and Dudley Marvin, two visionary leaders whose dedication to hospitality, business, and community has shaped the fabric of Northern Michigan.
Stafford Smith, a Northwestern University graduate, purchased the Bay View Inn in 1961, launching Stafford’s Hospitality, a legacy that grew to include The Pier Restaurant, The Weathervane Restaurant, The Perry Hotel, The Gallery, and Crooked River Lodge.
Smith’s leadership has shaped tourism and economic growth in the region, earning him Michigan’s Hotelier of the Year honors in 1995. In addition, Smith was the first recipient of the Stafford Smith Award, an honor bestowed by Select Registry for his exceptional contributions to independent innkeeping. As a distinguished organization representing over 300 premier inns, bed and breakfasts, and small hotels across North America, Select Registry upholds the highest standards of hospitality, ensuring each member property meets its rigorous 200-point quality assurance inspection.
Dudley Marvin, a Michigan State University graduate and U.S. Naval Reserve veteran, joined Stafford’s team in 1964, becoming president of Stafford’s Hospitality in 1980 and guiding its success until his retirement in 2010. A dedicated community leader, he has served on the Emmet County Zoning Board of Appeals, the Springvale Township Planning Committee, and the Pickerel-Crooked Lakes Association while preserving the historic Pointer Boat in Harbor Springs.
“Together, Stafford Smith and Dudley Marvin have defined hospitality in Northern Michigan, creating spaces that have welcomed visitors for generations and leaving an indelible mark on the region’s economic and cultural landscape,” Finley said. “Their contributions to business, community service, and tourism have strengthened the fabric of Northern Michigan, making them deserving recipients of the college’s highest form of recognition.”
North Central’s nurse pinning ceremony, the annual tradition that marks the completion of students’ nursing coursework, will be held immediately prior to commencement, at 4 p.m. in Petoskey Plastics Arena. Twenty-two student-nurses will receive their pins. A reception for nurses and their families will follow the pinning ceremony.
Kara Evans, who graduated from North Central’s nursing program in 2015, will deliver the keynote address to the 2025 nursing graduates. Evans has built a dynamic career in healthcare, spanning critical care, leadership and education. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Chamberlain University in 2017, further strengthening her expertise in the field.
Evans began her nursing journey as a nurse and team leader in McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital’s cardiovascular unit, where she developed her critical care skills while taking on leadership responsibilities. She later expanded her experience at Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital, serving as a medical-surgical nurse and house supervisor, overseeing hospital operations and managing a range of patient care needs.
Committed to shaping the future of nursing, Evans has also served as an adjunct clinical instructor at North Central, sharing her knowledge and passion with the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Both nurse pinning and commencement will be livestreamed for those unable to attend. For more information about both events, including a list of graduates by academic program, visit www.ncmich.edu/commencement.

ZONTA OF PETOSKEY PRESENTS GRANTS TO NINE AREA ORGANIZATIONS
Zonta Club of Petoskey awarded grants to nine area organizations for their work in the community to empower women and girls. During the 2024-2025 round of applications, 14 organizations submitted an RFP, requesting a total of $55,660. Zonta Club of Petoskey awarded grants supporting the following programs:
Camp Daggett is receiving $1,740 to fund printing and materials for a new STEAM curriculum developed in partnership with TOPOnexus, including guidebooks, maps, and tools for hands-on learning. This initiative will enhance programming at the Adventure Center and benefit both overnight and day campers - particularly girls - by encouraging engagement in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.
Child & Family Services is receiving $1,000 to help create The Peaceful Playground - a safe, outdoor play space at their Harbor Springs location for families affected by domestic violence, abuse, and/or neglect. This space will support healing and connection during supervised visits and child exchanges, offering children and parents the mental health and relationship-building benefits of time spent in nature and play.
Crooked Tree Arts Center is receiving $1,500 to support the School of Ballet's Choreographic Mentorship Residency, which provides young women and girls with a unique opportunity to explore creative expression and career possibilities in dance. The funding will bring professional mentors to guide students in choreography, helping them build confidence, skills, and a deeper connection to the arts. 40% of CTAC's ballet students receive financial assistance.
First Tee Northern Michigan is receiving $1,500 to support their rapidly growing Girls Golf program, which uses golf as a platform to teach life skills and empower young girls through mentorship and coaching by an all-female staff. The funds will help maintain a low student-to-coach ratio, provide lodging for a female intern, and support junior coaches—many of whom are program alumni—as they mentor the next generation of participants. 39% are female participants.
The Health Department of Northwest Michigan is receiving $260 to purchase two sensory wall panels for exam rooms in their Harbor Springs clinic. These panels provide sensory stimulation and a healthy distraction for young children during procedures like vaccinations, helping reduce stress.
The Manna Food Project is receiving $1,000 to sponsor women to participate in cooking classes in 2025 that focus on nutrition, food safety, and healthy meal preparation. These classes aim to empower women facing food insecurity by providing the knowledge, skills, and ingredients needed to make nutritious meals, supporting both immediate needs and long-term wellness.
Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity is receiving $2,000 to help tackle northern Michigan's housing crisis by building additional homes in the Meadowlands project. In the last 2 years, Twenty-nine households have purchased or received critical home care, and 50% of those households are women led. The funds will help provide affordable, energy-efficient homes for women and children, offering them stability and the opportunity for self-sufficiency, while contributing to the local workforce and economy.
The Women's Resource Center of Northern Michigan is receiving $3,500 to support the installation of essential technology in their newly expanded Petoskey facility, which will house critical services for women, children, and families. This funding will help ensure secure, efficient operations across programs such as domestic abuse and sexual assault support, trauma-informed therapy, and preschool education, all within a modern, accessible, and inclusive space.
North Central Michigan College is receiving $5,000 a year for two years from Zonta’s Women and Children’s Fund at the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Community Foundation, to support its Career and Technical Education Enhancement Project (CATEE), which is expanding and modernizing campus facilities to better prepare students—especially women—for high-demand careers in healthcare, STEM, and manufacturing. This investment will help provide state-of-the-art learning environments that empower women to gain skills, achieve economic independence, and become leaders in their fields and communities.
In addition to these grants, Zonta of Petoskey gives each year a $2,500 grant to the Women’s Resource Center Northern Michigan to support a scholarship for women at North Central Michigan College, plus operating support for the WRC Northern Michigan, and support to remodel a room at the Safe House. The club also provides money toward the making and donation of mastectomy pillows for McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital, and a $1,000 scholarship yearly for the Young Women in Leadership program.
This year’s Young Women in Leadership recipient is Alyssa Glaser of Petoskey, a sophomore at Albion College, majoring in political science, with a minor in psychology. Ms. Glaser has a concentration in public policy through Gerald R. Ford Institute at Albion, while in the Prentiss M. Brown Honors Program. She plans to get her law degree and work to help women trying to overcome domestic abuse.
The Women and Children’s Fund at the Petoskey Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation was established in 1996 with a $10,000 gift from the Zonta Club of Petoskey. The designated purpose of the fund is to support programs or projects which benefit area women and children and help them achieve their full potential.
Zonta Club of Petoskey was chartered in 1971 and is one of 38 clubs in the state of Michigan. Their members participate in service projects that support the mission of Zonta: to advance the status of women worldwide. Zonta International was chartered in 1919. More than $400,000 has been donated to local organizations since the club’s charter.
