Pet of The Week- Nova!
This pretty lady is Nova, a sweet, speedy little chihuahua who'd be overjoyed to scamper her way into your heart.
Nova is an adventurous 10 month old puppy who came to us as a surrender in March, being a puppy she's still working on a couple things like house training and manners, but is very polite in the presence of treats.
Nova enjoys spending her time outside playing alongside the other dogs, and has even met the cats on a couple occasions; though she doesn't seem especially keen on the cats, overall big or small, she has no trouble keeping up with the pack!

Kay Marie Photgraphy: Northern Traveler and Little Traveler
Kayla Dionne, owner of Kay Marie Photography, is a Northern Michigan photographer who specializes in wedding, portrait and landscape photography. She has lived locally in Charlevoix, MI for the past 7 years. She enjoys spending time exploring Northern Michigan with her husband and daughter.
It is in nature where Kayla finds her inspiration. Both Northern Traveler and Little Traveler were created in high hopes that its readers will find that same inspiration and admire all of the beauty Northern Michigan has to offer.
Northern Traveler showcases landscape imagery from Traverse City, MI up to Copper Harbor, MI. This book would be a great addition to your coffee table in your home and/or rental for guests to enjoy.
Inspired by our daughter, Little Traveler takes its readers around Northern Michigan, sharing stories and fun facts about popular destinations and attractions. Just like her older sister, Northern Traveler, this book also offers lots of favorite spots for littles you won't want to miss while in Northern Michigan. This children's book was made with so much love and we hope she find her way to your kiddos bookshelf to start dreaming up your next up north adventure.

MSHDA Awards Grant to Help Attract Healthcare Workers to Northern Michigan: Munson Healthcare among seven employers across the state to be chosen for the pilot initiative.
The Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) has announced that it has approved and awarded a $500,000 Employer-Assisted Housing Fund (EAH) matching grant to Munson Healthcare.
The EAH Fund is backed by $10 million in state funding and offers direct support to employers that contribute matching funds through cash investments, land donation, a below-market interest loan, or a combination to help develop new housing options. Munson will receive a $500,000 matching grant to create a housing stipend for those who commit to a 24-month employment contract within the healthcare system. Munson estimates they will be able to hire between 40-60 additional employees using the stipend program. For this program, Munson is focused on attracting employees to the area into hard-to-fill roles like nursing and other clinical roles.
“We have 500 job openings across our healthcare system, and we are using a variety of tools to attract and retain team members in an increasingly competitive housing market,” said Shelley Spencer, Chief Human Resources Officer for Munson Healthcare. “This support from the State of Michigan provides another welcome tool in our toolbox to attract new employees into hard-to-fill roles, as they relocate to Northern Michigan.”
The Employer-Assisted Housing Fund (EAH) is a state-funded pilot initiative designed to help employers invest in housing solutions for income-eligible households. These new housing grants can be particularly helpful for rural healthcare organizations like Munson where housing can be a major barrier to attracting workers.
“These grants are more than an investment in housing; we’re investing in our workforce, our economic stability, and our future,” said Amy Hovey, MSHDA CEO and Executive Director.
According to the Michigan Health and Hospital Association, there are 23,000 job openings in healthcare across the state of Michigan right now.
“Workforce shortages are challenging healthcare systems across the country but especially those in rural areas,” added Spencer. “We thank the State of Michigan for helping to address this critical need and for their support of our Northern Michigan healthcare team, patients and communities.”

NORTH CENTRAL MICHIGAN COLLEGE OPENS INNOVATIVE EARLY LEARNING CENTER: Ribbon Cutting Scheduled for June 10 at 10 a.m.
North Central Michigan College (NCMC) is proud to announce that its Early Learning Center (ELC) will open on Monday, June 9, 2025, bringing a new standard of high-quality, full-time childcare to families in Emmet County.
Located in the Pre-K Education Building on NCMC’s Petoskey campus at 1421 Howard Street, the center will serve up to 12 infants, toddlers, and young preschoolers in a multi-age classroom rooted in the Reggio Emilia philosophy—a child-centered approach that encourages exploration, creativity, and collaboration through play.
The ELC will operate Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., offering families a safe, nurturing, and educational environment led by experienced early childhood professionals.
A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on Tuesday, June 10, at 10 a.m. on-site. The community is invited to attend and tour the new facility following the event.
“The need for quality childcare is high in our community,” said Dr. David Roland Finley, president of NCMC. “The Early Learning Center will fill a much-needed gap for our students as well as families in Emmet County.”
The ELC is a pillar of Phase II of North Central’s Child Care Initiative (CCI), a strategic effort to build a sustainable, community-focused childcare system in Northern Michigan. The center follows a true-cost business model, ensuring the delivery of exceptional care while supporting a living wage and benefits for its dedicated staff.
“This center represents the heart of our mission—to elevate early childhood education as both a career and a community cornerstone,” states Jen Wixson, Early Childhood Education program coordinator and instructor. “We’re not only nurturing children; we’re building a stronger, more equitable future for families and the early care workforce in Northern Michigan.”
In addition to its Reggio Emilia-based curriculum, the center features a brand-new, nature-inspired playground designed to promote daily outdoor play and nature-based learning—core elements of the center’s inquiry-based philosophy.
The NCMC Early Learning Center is fully licensed through the State of Michigan and meets all requirements for health, safety, and quality care.
“As the Program Director, I am thrilled to see our team’s vision come to life with the opening of the Early Learning Center,” says Anne Thornton. “Working side by side with a team of dedicated and passionate teachers, we are crafting a unique and enriching environment that embodies the principles of the Reggio Emilia philosophy. The commitment to our shared values will be reflected in every aspect of the program, from how we document children’s learning to creating environmental stewards on our natural playground.”
Families interested in enrolling can begin the process by visiting: ncmich.edu/community-events/early-learning-center. There, parents will find details about the teaching philosophy, staff bios, enrollment, tuition, financial assistance and policies. Interested families are encouraged to fill out the online form to be placed on the NCMC ELC waitlist.

PAID WORK EXPERIENCE CONTINUES FOR YOUNG ADULTS IN NORTHWEST MICHIGAN
A program providing meaningful work experience and income for young adults is continuing in Northwest Lower Michigan. Northwest Michigan Works! has received a grant for the Young Professionals program. The program provides adolescent adults with job skills, earned income, and career exploration and preparation activities.
This summer, Northwest Michigan Works! is partnering with the Charlevoix-Emmet (Char-Em) ISD, Northwest Education Services, and Wexford-Missaukee ISD to offer the Young Professionals program. Students will learn skills related to welding training. Wexford-Missaukee ISD will also provide firefighter training.
“This grant, in partnership with Networks Northwest and Northwest Michigan Works!, opens incredible opportunities for our high school students. By earning a competitive wage while expanding their skills beyond the classroom, they are not only building their resumes but also enhancing their employability and future earning potential. We are thrilled to provide this pathway for growth and success,” said Jim Rummer, Director of Career and Technical Education at the Char-Em ISD.
“The Young Professionals program provides students and young adults with an invaluable opportunity to gain advanced welding skills, earn recognized industry credentials, and receive compensation while exploring meaningful career pathways. This hands-on training not only equips them with valuable technical abilities and boosts their confidence through real-world experience, but also serves as a vital link in strengthening our community and bolstering Michigan's workforce by cultivating a pipeline of skilled labor to meet the needs of our local and state economies,” said Patrick Lamb, Assistant Superintendent of Career and Technical Education at Northwest Education Services.
The Young Professionals initiative is designed to reduce youth unemployment and place young adults on a path to achieve lifelong economic self-sufficiency. The initiative supports young adults who are struggling to obtain employment by exposing them to multiple career and educational opportunities, such as entering a Registered Apprenticeship program, earning a college degree or certificate, and obtaining sustainable employment.
