Author Showcase with Debra Hansen, Annie Russell, and Joshua Veith
May 27th
Join us for a literary evening to celebrate some of our talented regional authors. They will each share their experiences of writing and their works. We will enjoy light refreshments and great conversation. Authors will be available to sell and sign books after the event.
- Deb Hansen is an Interfaith chaplain, author, coach, a descendant of European immigrants, and life-long border crosser. She recently returned to northern Michigan after her fifth winter volunteering in a shelter at the U.S./Mexico border. Borderlands, with its diary format, offers the reader a generous space to reflect on one of the most highly politicized topics of our times.
- Annie Russell is an author, artist, intuitive sensitive, and storyteller who splits her time between Charlevoix, MI. & New Orleans, LA. The Faerie Tale Chronicles is her current series set in both Charlevoix County and the oldest neighborhoods of New Orleans. It features a blending of ancient Celtic myths, modern-day enchantment and mysticism, and the unwavering strength of friendship and love.
- Joshua Veith is an author and educator living in the Elk Rapids area. In book one, Island and Main of his current book series Sudden Quiet, society has collapsed. In northern Michigan, the electrical grid has been down for over a year. Three scouts journey from Beaver Island to the darkened mainland. It is a dark exploration of humanity and the hope and healing offered by community and our connection to nature. Josh strives to be an Indigenous ally, recognizing that traditional relationships with the environment offer the most sustainable pathways for humankind’s interaction with the planet.

Pet of The Week- Pallo!
Hello! My name is Pallo, pronounced PAH-Low, and I am quite pleased to make your acquaintance!
I love people, but I may be stand-offish at first. I only really know how to sit, but I'm great on walks (which I love) and I will sit at the door and wait for you. I'm not much for playing ball, but I'll let you pet me until your heart's content and will lean in to get all the love you can give.
I can occasionally be selective about other dogs, but am learning to make new friends every day! I like to play rough and wrestle sometimes, so probably no small dogs.
Give me a chance and I'm sure I'll make you proud!

Charlevoix Cheese Company Awarded 'Start-Up To Watch' at Making It In Michigan Conference
Charlevoix Cheese Company was recently awarded the Start-Up to Watch Award at the Michigan State University Extension Product Center's Making It In Michigan Conference and Tradeshow in Lansing. The award is given annually at the conference to MSU Product Center clients who demonstrate consistent business excellence, innovation, and growth within the past five years.
Given the challenging economics of small-scale dairy operations, it is almost unheard of to have adult children come back to the farm to make it their vocation. But in 2012, Mandy and Matt Thompson did just that, returning to work with her parents Wilson and Judy Boss on their fourth-generation family farm located just outside of Charlevoix. Highly motivated to beat the odds and stay in business, over the next 10 years, the couple spent countless hours researching business model options and landed on a dream to own and operate a farmstead creamery. As part of their due diligence, Matt attended Michigan State University Extension’s Artisan Cheese Workshop, where he gained critical knowledge of the cheesemaking process. The couple also began to form a network of advisors and peers, including working with a world-renowned artisan cheesemaker and MSU Extension Dairy and Farm Management Educators, who provided industry specific information and expertise. The Thompsons also reached out to MSU Product Center Innovation Counselor Wendy Wieland, another Charlevoix native, who has 20+ years’ experience assisting small farm and food businesses to achieve their business goals.
Charlevoix Cheese Products can now be found in ninety-five retail stores throughout Michigan and Ohio, as well area restaurants, farmers markets and festivals. The Thompsons are continually expanding their product line, which ranges from cheese curds to signature cheddars, to their much-anticipated Gruyere, which is due out later this year.
