Lifelong Learning Class #7: High Seas Treaty

November 7th

Areas of the seas beyond national jurisdiction comprise the high seas, which are facing a degradation of ecosystems due to climate change and the increase in human activities, such as shipping, overfishing, pollution, and deep-sea mining.

The recently negotiated High Seas Treaty, also known as the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Treaty, will attempt to address these issues. How difficult will it be to convince nations to participate?

The Friends of the Charlevoix Public Library, with the generous support of Lynne and Mason Rosenthal present: Fall-Winter 2024 Lifelong Learning Program. The Lifelong Learning Program was initiated in 2016 as a means of providing an opportunity to develop a greater understanding of topics and issues of broad interest that may impact us all.

Resulting from a 400-million-year-old ocean deep beneath the Earth, salt manufacturers found high quality minerals in New York and Michigan. Over 70 ships were lost carrying salt to markets like Chicago and Superior, Wisconsin. Ric explores how the salt was discovered and dives several wrecks including the Adella Shores, Herman Hettler, and Miztec and gives insight into how fortunes were made and lost. Pet of The Week-Pallo!

Hola! My name is Pallo, pronounced PAH-Low, and I am quite pleased to make your acquaintance!

I love people but may be stand-offish at first. I know how to sit but I'm not sure of much else. I don't much care for playing ball but I'll let you pet me until your heart's content and will lean in to get all the love you can give.

I do well with other dogs my size but I'm very skeptical of animals smaller than myself. Cats? Never heard of them. I do pull a bit on my leash but with a little patience, I know I can be a very good boy on a walk. Give me a chance and I'm sure I'll make you proud!

NCMC TIMBERWOLVES TO HOST THIRD ANNUAL MILITARY APPRECIATION GAMES ON NOV. 11

Veterans, current service members enjoy free admission to Timberwolves vs. Bears double-header on Veterans Day

NCMC Athletics and the men’s and women’s basketball teams will honor veterans and active-duty military on Monday, November 11, when the Timberwolves face the Mott Community College Bears at 5:30 p.m. at Petoskey Plastics Arena.

Veterans and active-duty military will receive free admission to NCMC’S third annual Military Appreciation Games. All Timberwolf players will be wearing special warmups to honor past and present service members.

“One of the goals of our athletic program is developing student-athletes who are leaders on our campus and in our community, and gratitude is an important leadership quality,” said Athletic Director Ashley Antonishen. “Our Military Appreciation Games are a small but sincere gesture of gratitude and appreciation for our veterans and military service members.”

Antonishen added that themed games like the Military Appreciation Games and the Hunger Games — which collected more than 400 pounds of food for the Campus Cupboard student food pantry last year — are important to players and coaches. Women’s basketball head coach Michael Glass, in his first season with the Timberwolves, agrees.

“Our team is honored to be part of this special event. It’s bigger than basketball; it’s about coming together to recognize and celebrate the service and sacrifices of those who protect our freedoms,” Glass said.

The women tip off against Mott at 5:30 p.m. Men’s tip-off follows at 7:30 p.m. For the latest NCMC Athletics news and event livestreams, visit www.ncmctimberwolves.com

THE PETOSKEY SALVATION ARMY ANGEL TREE NEEDS GIFTS FOR LOCAL CHILDREN

Angel Tree gifts are often the only Christmas presents that the applicants children receive. Parents must often make difficult decisions on whether they should put food on the table, keep the lights on, heat their home, have a roof over head, have adequate medical care or have presents for their children on Christmas morning.

The Salvation Army not only assists with gifts, but also provides food vouchers to Oleson’s Food Stores so families can enjoy Thanksgiving and Christmas meals together. Considering the high rate of inflation, Holiday Assistance will be even more in demand and more critical to the families served this year.
