Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra presents Copland: Clarinet Concerto & Hoe-down
September 7th
Award-winning clarinetist Jeanmarie Riccobono takes centre stage in Aaron Copland’s jazzy Clarinet Concerto. Jeanmarie is the principal clarinetist in the Traverse Symphony Orchestra and teaches clarinet at Northwestern Michigan College and the Bay View Music Festival.
The renowned jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman asked Copland to compose a work for him. The result was a two-movement concerto: the first section is one of Copland’s most lyrical and melodious creations; the second is in an all-out jazzy style. The movements are connected by a cadenza for the soloist.
The concert will also include Copeland’s Hoedown from Rodeo, Debussy’s Dances Sacred & Profane, and Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte. Originally composed in 1942 for a ballet called Rodeo, Hoedown features two American square dance tunes and evokes the energy and adventure of the American pioneering spirit.
Cellist Lena Sytsma-Reed, winner of the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra’s 17th Annual Young Artist Competition, will be performing Haydn’s Cello Concert No 1.

Help Images by Morris Celebrate Aartvark Gallery's Many Years and Many Photographs in Charlevoix
Images by Morris has been delighted to exhibit and sell fine art photography through Aartvark Gallery for the past several years. Since November we featured kaleidoscopes as well, that were made by American craftsman. We used to run a gallery in Evanston, Illinois and when we moved we carefully packed our scopes away. They are now displayed in this lovely antique showcase, which was made in Chicago nearly a century ago.
Aartvark will be closing their retail location by the end of September. Our antique showcase needs a new home where it can be put to good use displaying and safeguarding its contents. Reach out to Susan if interested in purchasing it (312 608 3996) or email us at imagesbymorris@gmail.com. Stop by Aartvark Gallery to see this extraordinary collection of kaleidoscopes while you have easy access. Peruse the amazing collection of fine art photographs, most of which have been taken in the Charlevoix area. There are some great sales on Terry Salmonson’s images.

Pet of The Week-Duke!
This big headed fella is Duke! Duke was found wandering as a stray in really rough shape. He was missing most of the fur on his back end and clearly hadn't been given the love he deserves in quite some time. A good Samaritan brought Duke in to us where we were able to work on getting him on medications to help his skin, as well as getting him vaccinated and flea free.
He is doing so much better now and his hair is even beginning to grow back in, we couldn't be more pleased with his improvement.
Duke is a big lover who always wants to be around his people, he is very polite on a leash and could be walked by just about anyone. Despite his appearance upon arrival, we do believe Duke had a home at one point because he seems to know some basic commands and even seems to be housetrained. He also seems to enjoy other dog's company and would likely do well with cats.
Duke is a very gentle boy and would do well in almost any home. He does have a bit of separation anxiety so he would do best in a home where he would not be left for long periods of time.
Whether you're a big dog lover or not, Duke is sure to win your heart as soon as you meet him, please consider adopting or fostering this handsome boy, he sure deserves it!

DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR MICHIGAN RECONNECT PROGRAM: NCMC ENCOURAGES ELIGIBLE ADULTS TO APPLY BY DECEMBER 31
The Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) has extended the application deadline for the Michigan Reconnect program to December 31, 2024, a development North Central Michigan College (NCMC) fully supports. The six-week extension provides adults ages 21— 24 who have not yet earned a college degree the opportunity to enroll in the tuition-free community college scholarship program.
Launched in 2021, the Michigan Reconnect program was designed to provide adults ages 25 and older the opportunity to pursue an associate degree or skills certificate tuition-free through their local community college. Thanks to a temporary expansion announced by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in October 2023, the program now includes adults ages 21—24, extending access to higher education to an additional 350,000 Michiganders.
North Central President David Roland Finley highlighted the importance of extending the application deadline.
“This is a remarkable opportunity for younger adults in our community to return to college, complete their degrees, and enhance their career prospects,” Finley said. “We strongly encourage all eligible individuals to take advantage of this extended deadline and join the ranks of those already benefiting from Michigan Reconnect.”
Since its inception, the Michigan Reconnect program has received more than 177,000 applications across the state, contributing to Michigan’s Sixty by 30 initiative, which aims to equip 60% of working-age adults with a degree or certificate by 2030. The program has been particularly successful among students ages 21—24, with more than 23,000 applications received and over 5,000 students already enrolled statewide.
Rebekah Paauwe, a North Central graduate who completed her degree through the Michigan Reconnect program, shared her experience.
“Following a relocation to Petoskey in April 2021, my husband and I recognized the opportunity for a fresh start and decided to take advantage of the Michigan Reconnect Program, which enabled me to return to college,” Paauwe said. “I enrolled at NCMC in the fall of 2021 and successfully graduated in May 2024, marking almost a decade since my last college enrollment.”
Paauwe, who now works as an HR assistant at Irish Boat Shop, believes returning to college as an adult student ended up working to her advantage.
“Although I initially attended college directly after high school, my uncertainty regarding a career path led to dropping out,” she explained. “Deferring my college education until a later stage in life afforded me the opportunity to gain valuable life experience and mature, which ultimately facilitated a clearer understanding of my long-term career aspirations.”
Paauwe also emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities like the Michigan Reconnect program.
“It’s essential to avail yourself of every opportunity and resource at your disposal,” she said. “By taking initiative and putting yourself forward, you open the door to unforeseen possibilities.”
North Central Michigan College is committed to supporting all eligible students through the application and enrollment process. Prospective students must:
· Apply for the Michigan Reconnect scholarship at Michigan.gov/Reconnect by December 31, 2024.
· Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
· Enroll in a community or tribal college no later than the Summer 2025 semester.
For more information or assistance with the application process, students are encouraged to contact North Central’s Financial Aid Office at 231-348-6698 or visit www.ncmich.edu/admissions/michigan-reconnect.html.
“Don’t miss this chance to invest in your future,” Finley added. “North Central Michigan College is here to help you every step of the way.”

Area Students Receive Record Breaking $475,000 in Scholarships from Charlevoix County Community Foundation
Graduating seniors from Charlevoix County high schools will receive over $475,000 in scholarship funds to help them launch into post-secondary education programs, including vocational training and continuing education programs. This year, the Charlevoix County Community Foundation (C3F) awarded a total of 78 scholarships to 54 unique students. Of those, 47 were single year awards and 31 were multi-year scholarships, which provide financial assistance for students beyond their first year. Scholarship funds were established by local citizens and groups to honor family members, community leaders, educators, and others who value continuing education.
Collaborative geographic scholarship awards make it possible to provide more significant financial support for students by pooling available dollars from multiple individual funds at C3F. Collaborative award recipients for 2024 are Ella Day of Boyne City, Joshua Schultz of Charlevoix, and Zoe Bunker of East Jordan. Zoe had this to say about her collaborative scholarship award, “Receiving scholarship support means that I will be able to get my degree without financial setbacks…Scholarships like this one are the best way for me to follow my dream with as little stress as possible.”
This year, C3F also supported students pursuing career training and skills education fields such as cosmetology, auto mechanics, welding, and electrical lineman training. Charles Stanek, from Boyne City High School, hopes to become an electrical lineman and “help keep the lights on in whatever community” he is working in.
The following students received a C3F scholarship award this year: Brianna Ager, Alivia Blain, Isadora Boyer, Zoe Bunker, Scott Bush, Dylan Clapp, Aedan Cole, Ella Day, Angel Delgado Jr., Charlie Dobbelaer, Amelia Drenth, Gabrielle Dunlap, Katlynn Dunson, Bianca Gietzen, James Greenier, Jurgen Griswold, Madelyn Hardy, Maureen Hautz, Catherine Hayes, William James, Kitana Joseph, Lila Kelly, Grace Kujawski, Richelle Laskowski, Maddison Loper, Cadence Matelski, Justin McCully, Ryeley McGlinch, Molly Muladore, Grace Nemecek, Olivia Olund, Olivia Payne, Chloe Persons, Elizabeth Pop, Melinda Ranville, Kathryn Rohrer, Felicity Sape, Joshua Schultz, Peyton Scott, Alyssa Sherman, Charles Stanek, Lillian Stone, Lucas Stone, Landon Swanson, Anastasia Thompson, Shantyl Thompson-Stevenson, Amy Timmer, Hudson Vollmer, Justin Whisler, Dehquan Wilson, Samuel Wilson, Kate Wood, Preston Worden, and Daniel Ziebarth.
All scholarship recipients shared their excitement and gratitude, stating that this support will allow them to focus on their education and earning a degree instead of their financial burden. Some students said that feeling the community’s support and recognition through their scholarship award was particularly meaningful to them as they head out into the world on their own.
The Charlevoix County Community Foundation is a charitable organization made up of various funds – all of them established by local donors. Some funds are earmarked for specific causes, like scholarships, and others are open-ended to meet changing needs. The funds are held in permanent endowment, so they can continue to grow and generate income to enhance the quality of life in Charlevoix County, now and for generations to come.
For a complete list of the 2024 scholarship recipients, please visit www.c3f.org and click on Scholarships. For more information about how to support Charlevoix County youth, please contact the Charlevoix County Community Foundation at (231) 536-2440, or online at www.c3f.org.

Road Construction Update From Raven Hill:
Adversity is often the bridge between where we are and where we want to be. It can push us out of our comfort zone, leading to new opportunities and a brighter future.
Raven Hill is viewing the bridge construction on Fuller Road at Deer Creek as a temporary adversity and a steppingstone to a better and safer path to the Center. We are maintaining a positive attitude and moving forward with anticipation, knowing that the new timber bridge will be awesome!

Charlevoix's Whitley Family Featured in Michigan Municipal Electric Association Magazine for Three Generations, over 100 Years of Service to the City of Charlevoix Electric Department
With the passing of Ed Whitley at age 74 in February of 2024, the Whitley family, the Charlevoix Electric Department, and the entire City of Charlevoix saw the closing of a celebrated chapter in the community's history. In addition, the Michigan Municipal Electric Association, the Michigan Public Power Agency, and the entire Michigan Public Power community mourned his loss.
Ed served as the City of Charlevoix Electric and Water Department Superintendent for 30 years. His brother, John, who passed away in 2016, was an Electric Department lineworker and lead lineman for 38 years. The two brothers followed their father, Jim, into the Electric Department. Jim worked for 37 years as a lineman, and as Electrical Water Superintendent. Before that, he served the Army during World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
"When I moved to Charlevoix, I learned that the Whitley family is dedicated to the community and to Public Power," said John Griffith, City of Charlevoix Electric Department Director." I first met Ed Whitley through MMEA. His nephew, Andrew Whitley, is a lineman for the City, as were Andrew's father and grandfather. I think this speaks highly of the dedication, pride, and sense of service of individuals choosing a career in Public Power."
"Between my dad, my uncle Ed, and my grandfather, I think they gave 105 years of service to the City," said Andrew Whitley. "Except for a four month break between my dad's retirement and me being hired, we have served the Electric Department continuously for three generations.".
