Close To Home: A Storytelling Fundraiser To Support Housing North
October 2nd
Housing North and Here:Say Storytelling are staging a storytelling event titled “Close to Home” at Gypsy Distillery in Petoskey, MI on Wednesday, October 2nd from 6-8PM. This show will feature selected performers telling true, first-person stories that celebrate the many meanings of “home.”
We are putting out the call for people who have a “close to home” story to tell. Think of stories that you naturally tell in your everyday life – stories that have a beginning and an end, stories draw people in whether they are laughing or crying or feeling really invested in how it turned out. Rather than speeches about your work or memoirs of your journey, look for the story of something important that happened to you. If you are interested but have questions, please email Karen (Kabie) Stein at karen@heresaystorytelling.com.

Pet of The Week-Azazle (Azzy)!
This sweet senior is Azazle, also known as Azzy!
Azazle came to us as a transfer from the Saginaw area and he is ready to say goodbye to the city life and focus on a life of relaxion in good ole Northern Michigan. Azazle is a calm and gentle guy and would do in a quiet home. He enjoys beds and naps like most senior citizens and does seem to walk well on a leash.
As is the case with many senior shepherds, Azzy does have some hip issues and is on some medication for pain management. He is also hard of hearing.
He seems to be tolerant of other dogs that give him his space and we believe he would do well with cats. He does not like small dogs.

NCMC CELEBRATES MAJOR MILESTONES IN CATEE PROJECT WITH TWO OCTOBER EVENTS
Community invited to join hard hat tours and ground blessing ceremony as college expands healthcare, technology, and skilled trades programs
North Central Michigan College (NCMC) will host two special events in October to celebrate progress on its $22 million Career and Technical Education Enhancement project (CATEE), which launched in June 2024. The project, which will significantly expand NCMC’s healthcare, manufacturing, and skilled trades programs, focuses on updates to the college’s Health Education and Science Center (HESC) and the development of a state-of-the-art Technology Center.
The first event, CATEE Hard Hat Tours, will take place on Friday, October 4, at 9:30 a.m. in the lobby of the HESC. The event will include a brief presentation on the impact of the CATEE project, followed by tours of the construction site. Brunch will be provided. Attendance is free, but space is limited. Community members are encouraged to RSVP online at https://bit.ly/CATEE-Brunch.
Chelsea Platte, vice president for advancement and executive director of the NCMC Foundation, said she is looking forward to sharing the project’s progress with community members.
“The hard hat tours will be a great opportunity for the public to see firsthand how the CATEE project will transform our campus and enhance our ability to provide cutting-edge education in key industries like healthcare, technology, and skilled trades,” Platte said. “We’re excited to share this progress and engage with the community as we work together to meet the growing needs of Northern Michigan’s workforce.”
The second event, an Odawa Ground Blessing Ceremony, will be held on Monday, October 7, at 2 p.m. in the Harris Gardens, between the Technology Building and the HESC. NCMC will partner with the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians to host this special ceremony as the college prepares to begin Phase II of the CATEE project. Fred Harrington, retired NCMC professor and tribal elder, will lead the blessing. Light refreshments will be served, and a formal groundbreaking ceremony is planned for January 2025.
NCMC President David Roland Finley emphasized the importance of the ground blessing ceremony and its significance for both the college and the broader community.
“This will be the first time in our college’s history that we hold a ground blessing before a groundbreaking,” Finley said. “It’s a meaningful way to honor our region’s heritage and the significance of this project. We are grateful that the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians have graciously agreed to lead this ceremony.”
LTBB Tribal Chairperson Regina Gasco highlighted the deep cultural significance of the ground blessing and the importance of honoring the land.
“This ceremony is a powerful way to recognize the sacred connection we have with the land and our shared responsibility to honor and protect it,” Gasco said. “We are proud to partner with North Central Michigan College in blessing this space for future generations who will learn and grow here.”
North Central’s CATEE project includes the razing of the college’s 59-year-old Technology Building, transforming it into a Technology Center with 11,500 square feet of flexible learning space. The accompanying expansion of the college’s HESC will create an additional 7,200 square feet of classroom, clinical, simulation, and lab spaces to accommodate the college’s growing nursing and allied health programs. The anticipated project completion is set for Fall 2026, in time for the new academic year.
Cornerstone Architects, which has offices in Grand Rapids and Traverse City, is providing design and architectural services, while Lansing-based Clark Construction Company will oversee the buildings’ construction. The companies were awarded the project following a competitive bid process and approval by North Central’s Board of Trustees.
For additional CATEE information, including updates about campus operations during construction, visit https://www.ncmich.edu/about-us/our-campus/CATEE.

Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital Ranked One of the Best in Michigan for Physician Communication, Patient Recommendation
Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital is one of nine hospitals in Michigan, and 394 nationally, to receive a 5-star ranking for Physician Communication from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2024.
- With over 4,600 hospitals in the United States, this puts Charlevoix Hospital in the top 9% of hospitals for excellence in physician communication.
- Additionally, Charlevoix Hospital earned a 5-star CMS rating for Patient Recommendations, a distinction only 464 hospitals nationally received, with only nine in Michigan. This ranks Charlevoix Hospital in the top 10% in the country for patient recommendations.
“The recognition of Charlevoix Hospital from a patient standpoint, on physician communication and care received, is a testament to our commitment to putting the patients’ needs and concerns first,” said Joanne Schroeder, president and CEO, Charlevoix Hospital. “I want to applaud our providers for their efforts to partner with patients on their healthcare journey while continuing to maintain a high-level of quality care.”
CMS ratings are based on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. HCAHPS is a national, standardized survey of hospital patients about their experiences during a recent inpatient hospital stay. The physician communication star rating and patient experience ratings combines data from three HCAHPS survey questions and summarizes how well patients feel that their physicians explained things clearly, listened carefully to them, and treated them with courtesy and respect.

The Manthei Group featured in Bridge Magazine, Has First Company in Michigan to be Certified as a Recovery Friendly Workplace
An excerpt from the article (read the full article here):
Manthei Wood Products, which owns the facility and is part of Manthei Group that operates material and construction businesses in the region, has made a conscious effort to hire people who have struggled with addiction. It recently converted a 10-unit motel into in-recovery worker housing.
And while Abe Manthei, director of missional development for Manthei Group, says the family-owned company prides itself on “helping the community,” the effort also keeps the business humming in an era of increasingly desperate “Help Wanted” signs.
“We're just a little business up here in northern Michigan,” Manthei said, “but we believe we can actually make a difference in our employees’ lives.”
The company is among the first in the state to become certified as a “recovery-friendly workplace” a designation that means management is trained in the impact of addiction and open to offering jobs to those in recovery.
If the fledgling, statewide program operated through the Michigan Public Health Institute works, it’s likely to be expanded.

NCMC FOUNDATION RECEIVES MAJOR ENDOWMENT FROM THE BAY HARBOR FOUNDATION
The North Central Michigan College Foundation is pleased to announce that it has received a donation of $500,000 from the Bay Harbor Foundation. This generous gift will be held as an endowment by the NCMC Foundation and will fund annual scholarships through the newly established Bay Harbor Community Endowment.
The Bay Harbor Community Endowment is designed to continue the 20-year mission of the Bay Harbor Foundation Scholars Program, which provided recognition and financial assistance to deserving students with ties to the Bay Harbor community. The scholarships will be available to Emmet County residents, with preference given to Bay Harbor employees and their children or grandchildren.
“After 20 years, the Bay Harbor Foundation is at a point of transition, determining what our next chapter looks like while ensuring the legacy we built continues to benefit the community,” said Jason Allen, chairman of the Bay Harbor Foundation. “We feel that North Central Michigan College will be an excellent steward of these funds, upholding the principles of the Bay Harbor Foundation Scholars Program for future generations.”
The scholarship funds will be distributed in accordance with the NCMC Foundation’s endowed scholarship spending policy, currently set at a 5% annual distribution.
The scholarships will be available beginning in the Fall 2025 semester, with three tiers of eligibility:
-
Tier 1: Applicants who are either substantially employed within the Bay Harbor community during the calendar year of their application or are the children or grandchildren of a Bay Harbor employee.
-
Tier 2: Applicants who have completed their studies at NCMC and are pursuing a bachelor's degree at a four-year institution.
-
Tier 3: If funds remain after all qualified Tier 1 and 2 applicants have received scholarships, they will be made available to other NCMC students who are residents of Emmet County.
“This endowment provides a wonderful opportunity,” said NCMC President David Roland Finley. “In addition to honoring the legacy of the Bay Harbor Foundation, it ensures that students from our community will continue to benefit from these scholarships for years to come. The sustainability of this endowment guarantees that it will have a lasting impact on the educational landscape in our region.”
