A Message from Raven Hill
While Raven Hill is currently closed to the public for the duration of this COVID-19 crisis, everything continues behind the scene! The plants, animals and fish still need to be tended to: cleaned, fed and watered. Plus, the paperwork and grant writing is never ending!

Meanwhile, check out our Facebook and websites for “Home Learning Opportunities”. A new science, history or art activity is posted every day to be used to keep informal learning front and center for all ages in a fun, hands-on way. Don’t forget to share these fun lessons with others!

Raven Hill also recently began posting a photo journal on the website. A different facet of the Center is featured every day with photos that will bring back fond memories or motivate you to start a “Check it out” list for the next time you visit us. If you feel the need to come out and walk the grounds, please email info@miravenhill.org or text 231.675.6025 to let us know when you are coming, so that we can keep track of attendance and monitor how many people may be at the Center at any given time. We certainly want to keep the social distancing in place for now.

Longtime North Central Professor Passes Away
North Central Michigan College  Professor Larry Cummings, a fixture in the Petoskey community and an icon on the college’s campus, passed away at McLaren Northern Michigan on March 31, 2020, due to complications of Covid-19. He was 76. Cummings taught history and geography at North Central for 51 years, spending his entire professional career teaching generations of students who will remember him fondly.

Cummings was born in Charlevoix in 1943. He lived in Arizona and California as a child, but spent his formative years in Northern Michigan, attending Traverse City Central High School. He attended Northwestern Michigan College, Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and Central Michigan University, where he obtained a master’s degree in history.  A world-traveler, Cummings visited more than 50 countries, each providing him with insight and information that he shared with his students. His curriculum was rich with personal experiences of people, places and significant moments in history.

Counseling services are available to help North Central students and employees process their grief. Information about those services has been shared internally. The college will communicate additional information as appropriate, including plans to celebrate Cummings’ life and his many contributions to North Central. The college asks that the privacy of the Cummings family be respected at this difficult time. A Letter from Principle Harwood, Help Incentivize Students
I hope all is doing well with you and your family. My name is David Harwood, Principal/Superintendent of Charlevoix Montessori Academy for the Arts. Governor Whitmer announced last week that she is imposing Executive Order 2020-35. In the Executive Order, Governor Whitmer has ordered all schools in Michigan to remained closed through the remainder of the school year. The remainder of the school year, schools will be instructed students through distance learning.

Staff at Charlevoix Montessori Academy for the Arts are working on a plan for during this period that will allow students to continue their learning.  The plan will allow students to communicate and interact with staff and students through technology. To encourage students to complete their work, the school would like to reward students with prizes and incentives. It would be great if the prizes and incentives can come from our local community and businesses. If you can donate items for students to receive, it would greatly be appreciated. Donations would be recognized on the Charlevoix Montessori for the Arts Facebook page.

I realize that this has been an extremely difficult time for everyone. I appreciate all that everyone has done to help during this crisis. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at  dharwood@cma.edu  or 989-289-5956.

High Five Spirits Distillery Halts Production to Produce Hand Sanitizer for McLaren Health Care
High Five Spirits Distillery of Petoskey, which is widely known for its Gypsy Vodka, has halted production of vodka to focus on producing hand sanitizer for McLaren Northern Michigan.

Todd Burch, Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Northern Michigan, reached out to the distillery in mid-March. The pharmacy at McLaren Northern Michigan received sample ingredients from the distillery to compound the first bottles of the hand sanitizer and conducted lab tests to ensure that the resulting solution worked as effectively as the standard supply. When those tests came back successful, McLaren Northern Michigan gave the go ahead for production at the High Five Spirits facility.
High Five Spirits, which is known for its local involvement, has plans to produce 500 gallons of hand sanitizer for McLaren Health Care hospitals immediately and will work to ramp up production as the need arises. To read the full story click HERE.

Manna Food Project suspends food donations and rescue, encourages financial support instead
Like many other organizations during the COVID-19 health crisis, Manna Food Project (Manna) has been examining how to conduct safe operations and reduce further spread of the virus. To this end, Manna has decided to suspend all food donations from the public, including from over 20 businesses participating in its Food Rescue program.

This major change comes with other operational adjustments. Starting March 30, Manna’s facility will be open Monday through Thursday only, with staff working from home on Fridays. This, along with hiring a cleaning service and limiting access to the building, is just another way they hope to minimize exposure. Baker notes that emergency food boxes will still be available seven days a week, while the diaper pantry organized by Christ Child Society will move from Friday to Thursday mornings. The regular hours for Manna’s food pantry curbside service will not be affected. See www.mannafoodproject.org for further information and updates.

Urgent Needs Fund Makes Grants to Help Neighbors Impacted by COVID-19
There are lots of needs right now. They are likely to continue for some time. By supporting local nonprofit organizations, community members can help meet some of those needs for individuals and families who are experiencing loss of income caused by COVID-19. Food pantries and human services organizations that provide help with utilities and other necessities will see community needs increase in the weeks ahead. Donations to those organizations will ease the burdens faced by many who are unable to work due to necessary social distancing.

In response to this situation, the Charlevoix County Community Foundation (C3F) has made $25,000 in grants to partner organizations. To provide resources to nonprofits over the next weeks and months, and to help ensure funding will be available in the longer term, C3F encourages community members who want to help to make contributions to the Urgent Needs Fund at c3f.org. Nonprofit partners who are providing critical services to individuals and families who are disproportionately impacted by the instability and economic consequences caused by COVID-19 are eligible for further support as well.
