“There may be some slight programming changes, changes to the schedule, or changes to our drop off and pick-up procedures, but campers will still experience what it means to put ‘The Other Fellow First,’” states Nathan Fleshman, Summer Camp Director. “But our staff remains committed to making Camp Daggett the magical place it usually is.”

Charlevoix Community Foundation Empowers Local Children
The Charlevoix Community Foundation has awarded $2,100 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Michigan (Bigs) for its one-to-one mentoring program for Charlevoix County middle school students. This funding will allow recruitment of 10 new student mentees in grades 7-8 at the Charlevoix Middle/High School and Charlevoix Montessori Academy for the Arts.
“The primary goal of Bigs is to contribute to positive youth development by providing volunteer mentors who will help them identify and encourage their talents therefore igniting their potential for academic success and career exploration beyond high school,” said Executive Director, Cecilia Chesney. “The Charlevoix Community Foundation funds will directly impact the lives of 10 students making a lasting impact on their lives and on the community.”

Letter Drive Organized by Young Professionals Group Surpasses 1,000 Holiday Cards for Seniors
A Northern Michigan young professionals group has collected over 1,000 cards and letters for isolated seniors this holiday season.
Thrive 45 Young Professionals organized a “Heartfelt Holidays” Letter Drive for Seniors from mid-October through mid-December as a way to both engage community members of all ages and to support area elders in senior living centers or nursing homes. The group set a goal of 1,000 letters and encouraged everyone in the Greater Petoskey Area to participate, spreading the word to schools, clubs, nonprofits, and businesses across the region.

“We actually extended the letter drive into December as more and more people reached out to us,” says Jessyca Stoepker (The Manna Food Project), a member of Thrive 45’s Executive Team. “Some organizations used it as part of their holiday giving projects, while we also received lots of colorful drawings from young families.”

The Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce served as a “collection point” for the cards until the drive ended on December 11. After counting them and screening them for appropriateness, and bundling them into several boxes and large envelopes, Thrive 45 board members then dropped the letters off at the Petoskey Friendship Center last Wednesday morning.
