Calling New Businesses! Compete for Startup Funds at NLEA Pitch Night Competitions this Fall!

Polish up your business plan, the Northern Lakes Economic Alliance (NLEA) Northern Michigan Pitch Night competitions are back! All entrepreneurs and new businesses two years old or less are welcome to apply to compete for their share of startup dollars in the county where their business is or will be located. The public is welcome to come and cheer on their favorite local businesses at each competition!

This year there are three county-wide pitch nights taking place – in Antrim, Cheboygan, and new this year, Charlevoix, Counties - sponsored by Consumers Energy and DTE Energy Foundation and various local sponsors. The top three winners from each county pitch night will then have the opportunity to compete for additional startup funds at the Grand Event. Applications for each county-wide competition can be found at the following sites, Antrim Pitch Night www.antrimpitchnight.com , Charlevoix County Ignite www.charlevoixignite.com , and Invest Cheboygan County www.investcheboygan.com .

Competitors will receive business counseling from professionals from the SBDC and SCORE to help in preparing a 4-minute business pitch for the panel of judges on the night of the competition. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be awarded as well as an audience selected People’s Choice Award. There will also be time for competing businesses to network and make connections with other business professionals and angel investors in the audience.

Woofstock 2019
August 3

The Charlevoix Area Humane Society will host their fifth annual WoofStock music and pet festival. The day will be a full day event to celebrate a wide variety of music to support the North West Michigan Region and the animals we love.

This event will be held at the Mackinaw Trails Winery. We anticipate approximately 2,000 people including hundreds of friendly dogs attending throughout the course of the day and evenings events. There will be bands performing during the day and early evening on several stages, an open mike stage. There will also be animal agility demonstrations, pet contest, the Doxie Derby at 3:00 and more, for a full pet friendly day! Food, craft and pet related vendors will have the opportunity to sell and show off their products and services.

After your session, continue the relaxation with a glass of wine in the 1918 Cellars Wine Tasting Room. Event is $20 per person, and includes the yoga session and one glass of wine. Bring your own yoga mat- yoga mats are available in limited quantity and must be requested in advance.
McLaren Foundation hosts FREE Summer Wellness Expo at Nub's Nob

McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation has teamed up with its Foundation Board members and Nub’s Nob to host the first annual Summer Wellness Expo. Community members are invited to experience the “keys to health living” in distinct areas: Keys to Fitness: hiking, running, and fitness classes, Keys to Nutrition: tips and demonstrations on healthy eating, Keys to Lifesaving Skills: hands-on training for community CPR, Heimlich Maneuver, Stop the Bleed, and more!, Kids activities, lunch, and additional hands-on sessions, Childcare available.

Event organizers encourage everyone to come dressed to participate to the degree one wants, as the 20-minute sessions and fitness classes are designed to be hands on. Just a few of the fitness activities include CrossFit, Yoga, Graston Deep Tissue Technique, a Labyrinth, a self-guided hike up the hills of Nub’s Nob, and Jazzercise.

Vet Stock Music Festival & Bike Show
August 11

Charlevoix Elks #2856 proudly presents Vet Stock! It is a music festival, bike show and celebration of service. They will have performances by Detroit's legendary Sunglasses After Dark from 2:30-6pm and Gaylord's finest Exit 282 from 7-10pm. There will be a motorcycle show and contest from 1-5pm with great prizes awarded. There will be 50/50's throughout the day! Food will be provided by the Kiwanis Club and Lions Club and this event is open to the public. Cost is $10 at the door and all proceeds go to local veterans.
40th Annual Senior Picnic and Health Expo
August 13

Takes place at the Harvest Barn Church in East Jordan. Picnic tickets are currently on sale and you must have a ticket to attend. Tickets are being sold through the Commission on Aging Office, at the Charlevoix, East Jordan, and Boyne City Senior Centers and if there are tickets available, they will be sold at the door the day of the picnic. Tickets are the same price as last year at $5.00 for a Senior (60+), and $8.00 for a Non-senior.

Going PRO Talent Fund Information Sessions
A popular employee training fund in Michigan will offer $30 million dollars businesses can use to train their workforce. Training can be provided for existing employees, new hires, or registered DOL apprentices for occupations in several industries, including but not limited to; manufacturing, construction, IT, landscaping, healthcare, hospitality, non-profits, food production, and more. The application period for Talent Fund grants is expected to begin in mid-September. Prior to the start of the application period, Northwest Michigan Works! is holding Employer Information Sessions to help businesses learn about the Going PRO Talent Fund.

Closest employer information session is in Petoskey at North Central Michigan College in the Library Conference Room on August 14th from 9-10am. Businesses planning to attend one of the information sessions should RSVP to:business-services@networksnorthwest.org or 231-922-6920.

We are getting ready to publish our very popular Fall Sports Gameday Programs Deadline is Friday, August 9th. These programs are handed out free at all home games at these schools. This year we are publishing programs for Charlevoix High, East Jordan High, Gaylord High, Grayling High and Mancelona High Schools.

This is a high quality program with tons of content and a great fundraising opportunity for these 5 schools. We donate a minimum of 10% of all the proceeds to each school's Athletic Department. If you want an ad in multiple school programs we offer a nice discount.

Charlevoix County Transit Seeks Your Input for Public Opinion Survey
Charlevoix County Transit has made available a public opinion survey to gather input concerning public transportation needs and services in the county. This survey is part of community outreach efforts for a study that will result in a Transit Master Plan.

Community Foundation Grants Support Oncology Patients, Nurse Navigator Program at McLaren Northern Michigan
The McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation received grants totaling $28,873 from local Community Foundations for the Oncology Nurse Navigator Program at McLaren Northern Michigan. The grants will support newly diagnosed patients navigate their cancer journey.
Oncology Nurse Navigators work with approximately 2,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients from across 22 northern Michigan counties annually. Nurse Navigators ensure seamless and coordinated care among physicians, diagnostic tests, and cancer treatments. Nurse Navigators complete specialized training to work with cancer patients. They offer education, support, and guidance to help patients and families cope and overcome financial, logistical, and social barriers to care. The Oncology Nurse Navigator Program was established in 2013 by donors to the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation. To learn more, visit HERE .
