Community Foundation and Health Department Partner to Provide School Nurses
Ten years ago, the Community Foundation was part of an effort to provide school nurses across Charlevoix County and recently made a grant to sustain that service for hundreds of local children.  “Healthcare services provided by school nurses are important in our local schools every day, and they are especially important today.  We are so fortunate to be in a position to partner with the Health Department of Northwest Michigan to make these services a reality for the benefit of our students and our school districts,” explains Chip Hansen, president of the Charlevoix County Community Foundation.
A grant for $130,000 from the Community Foundation will help the Health Department provide two full-time school nurses to serve in Boyne City, Boyne Falls, and East Jordan Public Schools for the 2020-2021 school year. Charlevoix Public Schools was able to fill the gap in health support on their own.  Confirmed funding for the current school year will also provide time for the Health Department to engage with the school districts and other potential partners to explore collaborations aimed at sustaining the school nursing program for the longer term.

Local Businesses Pass Police Alcohol Compliance Checks
SAFE in Northern Michigan, a youth substance use prevention program and partner organization of the Health Department of Northwest Michigan, recently completed alcohol compliance checks at local businesses with the help of the Michigan State Police. Compliance checks are conducted periodically at randomly selected alcohol-selling businesses to ensure they are prohibiting the sale of alcohol to minors.

When conducting a check, an underage youth is under the supervision of a police officer and enters a store in attempt to purchase alcohol. If the employee sells the alcohol to the minor, the police immediately issue a citation. SAFE in Northern Michigan has congratulated the following businesses for passing the compliance checks, by refusing the sale of alcohol to minors and protecting area youth.

• Walgreen’s - 1301 US-31 Petoskey (North)
• EZ Mart (North) - 12665 US-31 Charlevoix
• Krist (#041) - 12969 US-31 Charlevoix
• Bridge Street Wine and Spirits - 100 Belvedere Ave Charlevoix
• Holiday Gas Station - 1408 Bridge St Charlevoix
• Next Door Food Store - 1505 Bridge St Charlevoix
• Walgreens - 1500 Bridge St Charlevoix
• Meijer Gas Station - 2141 US-131 Petoskey

Susan Pulaski, SAFE in Northern Michigan Project Director, shared, “Our goal is that all businesses successfully pass the compliance checks and don’t sell to minors. It is really a simple process if the clerk looks at the ID and it is vertical then the person is under 21 and they should not sell.”

90th District Court Resumes Jury Trials
The 90th District Court for Charlevoix and Emmet counties recently became the first district court in our region to hold a jury trial since the COVID-19 pandemic according to Judge Angela Lasher. The statewide shutdown in March greatly impacted the courts. While the 90th District Court continued to operate and address all necessary hearings, the Michigan Supreme Court halted all jury trials through the end of June. “Because we adapted so quickly to remote technology, the District Court has not had a backlog of cases and we have met the safety needs of our employees and the public”.
