Senior and Emergency Grocery Service
Charlevoix County Transit announced today that a Senior and Emergency Grocery Ordering/Delivery Service is being added to the services offered by the County’s Transit.  One of the drawbacks that transit officials noticed was that for curbside pickup available for groceries an individual needed to place their order via a smartphone or web-based application.  During the height of the shutdown, the website and app ordering was time consuming and problematic for many and therefore transit didn’t see many requests grocery delivery.
The expansion of the Transit’s delivery program will provided assistance to those needing help with ordering their groceries.  County residents who would like to use the Grocery Ordering/Delivery Program can call Program Coordinator at 231.497.1430 on designated shopping days to place their grocery order. The program coordinator will then input the order with the caller, take payment information (credit/debit card) and then place the order as well as scheduling the grocery delivery in transit’s scheduling system. This program is currently limited to in-county grocery stores utilizing the store shopping app.
Designated days/times for orders to be placed:
Monday              1:30-3:00pm
Tuesday              9:00-10:00am and 1:30-3:00pm
Wednesday       1:30-3:00pm
Thursday            9:00-10:00am and 1:30-2:30pm
While this program initially focused on helping our county’s aging population, with a surge in COVID cases and the flu season upon us, transit officials felt this was a worthwhile community service that should be offered to anyone who is in need of help or worried about going into stores.  Charlevoix County’s Commission on Aging will assist the Charlevoix County Transit with getting information about this program out to the county’s aging population as well as continue to assist those over 60 years old with transit fares for in-county rides as well as out-of-county medical appointments.
For more information about Transit rides or the free delivery services offered, please call 231.582.6900 between 7:30am and 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.

Due to the latest Michigan Pause Order, our customer information/utility and tax payment window will be open from 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM Monday through Friday until further notice. For more information click HERE.

Health Department of Northwest Michigan Launches Digital COVID-19 Survey
Over the past few weeks, we have seen a rapid increase in the number of new daily cases in our region. When community transmission becomes so widespread, our strategies need to pivot to have the most impact. This approach involves quickly identifying and investigating high priority cases such as those who potentially increase the risk for further spread.

In order to both gather and share important information as quickly as possible, we have adopted a new online survey to conduct case investigations with individuals that receive positive COVID-19 test results. Gathering this information from those who test positive helps us to identify those who may spread the virus to others. This is also important in order to initiate isolation and quarantine as soon as possible because any delay to this process can result in unnecessary spread. To see a full overview of how the survey system works and more general information click HERE.

North Central Michigan College Names Building for Borra Family's Lead Gift in BTT Campaign
One of the oldest buildings on North Central Michigan College’s campus is getting a facelift, including a new name. In recognition of making the lead gift to the college’s Building Tomorrow Together (BTT) campaign, the former Administration Classroom building will be renamed in honor of Pier C. & Renee A. Borra.

The new name, the Borra Learning Center, not only pays tribute to the lead donors, it also reflects the focus of the building’s renovation on enhancements for student learning and success in today’s technology-driven world.
This building is where nearly all North Central students attend classes at some point in their educational journey. After over 50 years, it is being renovated to include state-of-the-art classrooms, a student-centered space for academic and career advising services, and a spectacular new Student Commons to build a greater sense of community on campus.

The Administration Classroom Building is currently under construction and the renovation is slated for completion in the summer of 2021. The building will adopt its new name, the Borra Learning Center upon the project’s completion. If you would like to learn more about the Building Tomorrow Together Campaign, please visit ncmich.edu/buildingtomorrow or call (231) 348-6621. Click HERE to see full press release.

Charlevoix County Transit Received
Heros In Motion Award

On November 10th, Charlevoix County Transit’s Director Jill Drury and several staff members accepted the Heros In Motion Award from the Community Transportation Association of America (CTAA) and Toyota USA. The award was presented to four transit agencies for their innovation and dedication to community during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Upon accepting the award, Drury stated, "We are honored to be recognized for the service we provide to our communities. Like many transit agencies, Charlevoix County Transit adapted quickly and began providing non-traditional transit services such as food and prescription deliveries to our county residents.”  Drury thanked CTAA for their work on behalf of rural and small urban transit agencies and Toyota USA for their support of public transit. “So many transit agencies across our country are working hard during this pandemic and we thank you for being chosen for this award."

During the award introduction it was noted that Charlevoix County Transit officials noticed that grocery delivery was not being utilized due to consumers having to use a web-based program or app to order groceries. That observation spearheaded discussions between Transit and Commission on Aging and culminated in a new Grocery Ordering and Delivery Service which will begin in early December. Initially the service will be available to anyone in the community and once we’re in a post-pandemic climate, there will likely be eligibility criteria established for the service.

Charlevoix County Transit has provided passenger transportation services to Charlevoix County residents since 1980.    For more information about transit’s services, call 231.582.6900 or email info@cctransit.org.

Harwood Gold Recognized for Marketing Excellence by MSU Product Center

The rural road that Amber and Katie Parsons grew up on winds deep through the history of their Parsons Family ancestors, so much so that it bears the family name. Five generations later, the sisters have carved a new path to form the newest iteration of the family legacy, Harwood Gold. Located in Charlevoix Michigan, and with more than a century’s history of making maple syrup, the business was recently recognized by the Michigan State University Product Center for their achievements in marketing excellence. The honor was bestowed at the Cook, Share, Prosper Summit, held online on November 12, 2020.

Having been a favorite of local farmers market customers, the syrup produced by the Parsons family is the essence of what local food enthusiasts are looking for, small-batch, pure and authentic. Building from that base market, and with the help of other family members, the sisters formed Harwood Gold in 2014. Knowing that maple could be so much more than a pancake topping, they set about creating a line of specialty food products, many unique in their flavor profile and ingredients.

Given that seasonal farmers markets presented limited sales opportunities, they opened Harwood Gold Cafe' in 2016. The store now features over 45 maple-based food items, products which include preserves, condiments, sauces, infused syrups, mixes, sweet and savory baked goods. After a couple years of impressive growth, Katie realized that a refreshed brand style and social media presence would appeal to a greater variety of customers. Amber set about creating new business relationships, building their wholesale accounts to include some of the most recognized names in the Michigan’s foodie scene, including Zingerman's and Fustini's Oils & Vinegars. Harwood Gold products can now be purchased in over 65 locations in Michigan and beyond. To see the full story click HERE!

Networks Northwest Receives National Award for Housing Study

Networks Northwest has received a 2020 Aliceann Wohlbruck Impact Award from the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) for a Target Market Analysis showing the demand for housing in northwest Michigan. The study is being used by communities in the region that are looking to plan for expanded and increased housing opportunities. Networks Northwest partnered with Housing North and contracted with LandUse USA, a real estate analysis firm, to conduct the target market analysis. Networks Northwest and other award-winning projects from around the country were recognized during NADO’s virtual 2020 Annual Training Conference, held online October 20-22.

“Our annual Impact Awards program is an opportunity to highlight the important work our members do every single day to serve their local communities,” said 2019-2020 NADO President Kevin Byrd. “These projects show the best that regional development organizations have to offer and are a real testament to the value they add to their regions.”

The target market analysis points to a regional total demand for 10,880 new rental units in 2020 and 4,660 new ownership units in 2020. Most of the demand is for lower-priced housing units: about two-thirds of ownership housing demand was for units priced below $200,000, and 83% of the demand for rentals was for rents of $800 per month and less. These numbers are a stark contrast to the housing that is available in the region and underscore the dire need for attainable housing for workers.

"Housing continues to be a pressing issue for many communities across the region,” said Matt McCauley, Networks Northwest CEO. “Networks Northwest is committed to providing the best available information and tools for local decision-makers to positively impact the availability of quality housing for working families."

The complete analysis, and county and community-specific studies, are available on housingnorth.org in the Resources section and networksnorthwest.org/tma.
