Anora O'Connor Join The Boathouse On Lake Charlevoix
Rebecca and Rick Gotts, owners of The Boathouse on Lake Charlevoix, are excited to announce that Anora O'Connor will be taking the helm overseeing the operations of the new venue, rental properties and the Water Street commercial building.

Anora spent the last 13 months creating enthusiasm and momentum at Char-Em United Way. “Spending the last year working in nonprofit has given me a whole new perspective of the needs in our community. Ideally, I will remain involved with CEUW at some capacity because I believe in the mission, values and important work that is being done. With that said, I am super excited to be getting back to my roots in hospitality and working with some pretty amazing people. And It’s just a few blocks from my house to boot. ” Anora said.

When Rebecca and Rick originally purchased the properties, they had big dreams of creating something special for the community as a way to give back. The Boathouse is expected to open its doors in just a few months. This fully renovated event space will be host to weddings and fundraising and corporate events with additional exciting growth on the horizon.
Rebecca shares, “With Anora’s hospitality and leadership background, we are looking forward to building this business into a successful staple in East Jordan. We were thrilled when she accepted our offer to lead this endeavor.”

Dorothy Gerber Strings Program Practice Challenge
To become excellent at playing an instrument, a student needs to practice consistently and learn from a master teacher. Star Wars’ Jedi masters train apprentices over the course of years to become proficient in the use of “The Force.” Dr. David Reimer, the director of the Dorothy Gerber Strings Program, used this as inspiration for the 2020 theme of the program’s annual practice challenge.

The Jedi Training Challenge provides motivation for students to make the daily effort to improve at their instrument, while teachers in the Dorothy Gerber Strings Program use the time to teach good practice habits. During the challenge, students log their practice time and report those at the end of each week, with a leader board kept on the program’s website ( dorothygerberstrings.org ). The final scores include total minutes practiced, but also formulas awarding consistency and quality.

The Gerber Strings Program Practice Challenge event begins on January 27 and concludes with an announcement of which students have attained the title of Jedi Master of Music at a concert on March 22 at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts. Students from throughout the Gerber Program participate, from Elk Rapids to Pellston and Boyne Falls to Beaver Island – ten area towns in all.

Health Department Receives Gold Workplace Award

The Health Department of Northwest Michigan has been awarded the Gold Workplace Award from the Michigan Breastfeeding Network for the second year in a row for being a breastfeeding-friendly workplace.
The Michigan Breastfeeding Network provides criteria that employers must meet to be considered a breastfeeding-friendly workplace. The Health Department has established a Workplace lactation policy that includes a private space and time to express milk during the workday.
In addition to creating a workplace culture that supports breastfeeding, the Health Department boasts some of the highest breastfeeding rates among Michigan for mothers who utilize the Women, Infants, Children (WIC) program – 64% at six weeks for Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet and Otsego Counties, compared to a state average of 49%. Breastfeeding, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), can provide unmatched health benefits for babies and mothers, including reducing risks of asthma, obesity, Type 1 diabetes, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and ear infections in infants who were breastfed, and lowering the mother’s risk of high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, ovarian and breast cancer.
The Health Department has two International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants and four Certified Lactation Specialists within the agency. They also offer free newborn home visits to any mother, regardless of income – a visit that often allows for breastfeeding support as those needs arise.
For additional information about breastfeeding support services, call the Health Department at 1-800-432-4121 or visit nwhealth.org. For additional information on how to become a breastfeeding-friendly workplace, visit mibreastfeeding.org/workplace/.
