Happy New Year! What a year 2020 has been, and we can say that we have never been so thankful for you, choosing to partner with the Manthei family for construction products and services. In 2021, MDC Contracting is rebranding into Manthei Construction. Historically our company was called Manthei Development Corporation, and in 2003 we changed our branding to MDC Contracting. We aren’t a land developer or just a contractor, but we are a family business in the construction industry in Northwest Michigan, so we believe that Manthei Construction is a name that sums us up. Reconnecting to Our Land: 2020 Reminded Us to Appreciate this Wonderful Land
As this past year tested us on so many levels, our communities turned to the healing balm of nature with great appreciation. Little Traverse Conservancy reports that since the pandemic hit last spring, record numbers of visitors have enjoyed many of the hundreds of lands open to the public throughout five counties.

2020 highlights for Little Traverse Conservancy:

-         A total of 924 acres with 3,684 feet of water frontage were protected in 2020.
-         This includes acquisition of the 280-acre Offield Family Viewlands Working Forest Reserve near Harbor Springs on Earth Day, April 22. Formerly a golf course, the property features more than 4½ miles of trails following old golf cart paths and is known for magnificent views of Little Traverse Bay and the Inland Waterway.
-         Nearly six miles of designed mountain bike and hiking trails were completed at the Tanton Family Working Forest Reserve southeast of Petoskey.
-         15 miles of new trails were created overall in 2020.
-         Immersive and multi-disciplinary environmental education programs occurred at new schools this year through the Conservancy’s Forest School Program.
-         The 12th edition of the Featured Lands Trail Map was printed.
-         840 species were documented on Conservancy lands through the iNaturalist platform
-         A record number of individuals, families, and businesses joined the Conservancy in 2021 with current membership at more than 4,200.

Fleming shared that the organization suffered great losses in 2020 with the passing of two of Little Traverse Conservancy’s original founders: Seberon “Boo” Litzenburger and Dave Irish. “These two men were part of a small group of individuals who deeply understood the need to permanently protect natural land for everyone. We are so grateful for the legacy they established that continues - and is arguably even more important – today.”

Charlevoix Historical Society's David Miles makes The Detroit News's "This year's very Best- the Michigan Notable Books"

One of January's distinct pleasures is the annual Michigan Notable Books announcement from the Library of Michigan -- that institution's judgment on the very best titles published in the preceding year.

The library unveiled its 2021 list, spotlighting 20 of what its selection committee regarded as the greatest reads from the past year that are either about Michigan, explore Midwestern themes, or were written by Michigan authors. The committee always casts a wide net, pulling in both nonfiction and fiction. This year, members had to work through more than 250 submissions.

For David L. Miles, curator at the Charlevoix Historical Society and author of "Boulders: The Life and Creations of Earl A. Young in Charlevoix," the news fell like a bolt from the blue.

"I have been hovering in the stratosphere ever since Dec. 10 when I was notified by the library," he said, "performing fist pumps and yelling 'Yes!'"

Miles' book, with photographs by Mike Barton and published by the Historical Society, spotlights Earl Young, a realtor who never studied architecture but designed and built some of Charlevoix's most-distinctive houses, and one drop-dead gorgeous waterside restaurant, The Weathervane.

Young's work has become a significant tourist draw. Miles says in the summer, more than 200 cars a day drive by the Park Avenue block with the heaviest concentration of Young's idiosyncratic, vernacular stone houses. Variously nicknamed the "mushroom" or "hobbit" houses, they're instantly recognizable by their curvaceous roofs.

For the time being, the book is only available through the Charlevoix Historical Society. (Call (231) 547-0373 or visit chxhistory.com and click on "Shop.") He started work on "Boulders," Miles said, "right after New Year's in 2021. It was 11 months of work," he added, before correcting himself: "No, nine months. You can't get anything done in Charlevoix in the summer."
