Dorothy Gerber Strings Program Practice Challenge
To become excellent at playing an instrument, a student needs to practice consistently and learn from a master teacher. Star Wars’ Jedi masters train apprentices over the course of years to become proficient in the use of “The Force.” Dr. David Reimer, the director of the Dorothy Gerber Strings Program, used this as inspiration for the 2020 theme of the program’s annual practice challenge.

The Jedi Training Challenge provides motivation for students to make the daily effort to improve at their instrument, while teachers in the Dorothy Gerber Strings Program use the time to teach good practice habits. During the challenge, students log their practice time and report those at the end of each week, with a leader board kept on the program’s website ( dorothygerberstrings.org ). The final scores include total minutes practiced, but also formulas awarding consistency and quality.

The Gerber Strings Program Practice Challenge event begins on January 27 and concludes with an announcement of which students have attained the title of Jedi Master of Music at a concert on March 22 at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts. Students from throughout the Gerber Program participate, from Elk Rapids to Pellston and Boyne Falls to Beaver Island – ten area towns in all.

Andy Kempf named 4Front CEO
4Front Credit Union’s board of directors has named Andy Kempf the northern Michigan financial solutions provider’s new CEO. The announcement follows the planned December 31, 2019 retirement of David Leusink, who led the northern Michigan-based financial solutions provider since its launch in January 2015. Kempf has served the previous five years as 4Front’s president.

Kempf found his way to the credit union industry via traditional banking, beginning his career in commercial lending with a mid-regional bank. He served as CEO of Preferred Credit Union (Grand Rapids) prior to leading the former Traverse City-headquartered Members Credit Union. Members Credit Union welcomed the membership of Charlevoix-based Bay Winds Federal Credit Union following the 2015 merger that produced 4Front.

A longtime industry advocate and thought leader, Leusink dedicated more than 30 years to the credit union industry up to his retirement. As CEO of Charlevoix’s Bay Winds Federal Credit Union in 2014, Leusink helped guide one of the largest successful Michigan credit union mergers in recent memory when the membership of the former BWFCU voted overwhelmingly to merge with Traverse City-based Members Credit Union, producing 4Front, now among Michigan’s 30 largest credit unions.

North Central Michigan College Named Finalist for National Award

North Central Michigan College has been named a finalist for an American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) award in the category of “Outstanding College/Corporate Partnership.” AACC has selected North Central as a finalist based on the college’s longstanding partnership with Precision Edge Surgical Products .

In 2014, North Central launched a mobile digital fabrication lab, the “Fab Lab,” to increase the level of workforce training available to employees engaged in producing high-end medical cutting tools at regional Precision Edge Surgical Products locations. North Central and Precision Edge quickly involved the Northern Lakes Economic Alliance (NLEA) and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) in a unique partnership that leveraged state support for the project once hiring targets at Precision Edge were achieved. North Central bore costs to develop the program and its curriculum and worked closely with all partners to ensure curricula met industry needs.
As Precision Edge’s production quotas increased and employees could not be released from work for additional training, North Central transitioned the Fab Lab from visiting Precision Edge locations to visiting high schools in Precision’s immediate area, targeting interested students with accelerated certificates in Computer-Numeric-Controlled (CNC) machining courses designed to help them enter the workforce sooner and to get Precision more trained employees faster. Ultimately, hiring targets at Precision were met, and the State of Michigan released funds to compensate North Central for its role. This project has since spawned additional manufacturing and grant collaborations between North Central and the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (LTBB), among others.

AACC’s Outstanding College/Corporate Partnership Award honors “local, regional and national collaboration between a college and corporate partner that has achieved demonstrable, multi-year success in advancing the mission of the institution(s), the economic prosperity of a community, region or the nation, and the learning excellence of students,” according to AACC’s website.  ncmich.edu
McLaren Northern Michigan Named Top 50 Heart Hospital for 3rd Year in a Row

For a 3 rd year in a row, McLaren Northern Michigan was named one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by IBM Watson Health TM . McLaren Northern Michigan was one of only two Michigan hospitals to receive this award and is the only northern Michigan hospital recipient.

The Watson Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals™ study scores hospitals in key clinical and operational performance areas including mortality, complications, and re-admissions. McLaren Northern Michigan excelled in clinical outcomes for heart attack and heart failure treatments, as well as open heart and angioplasty surgeries, compared to hospitals nationwide. On average, patients spent less on procedures and had shorter hospital stays. This is the fourth time McLaren Northern Michigan has been recognized with this award since it began in 1998.

The highly-trained McLaren Northern Michigan team of cardiologists, surgeons, and staff can diagnose and treat complex cardiac conditions and provide the most comprehensive heart care available. Our cardiologists travel over 50,000 miles a year to provide award-winning heart care close to home. We have full cardiology practices in Gaylord, Petoskey, and Sault Ste. Marie, and an additional 6 outreach locations throughout northern Michigan and the eastern Upper Peninsula. The winning hospitals were announced in an IBM press release on November 19. mclaren.org/northern-michigan
