Painting Multiples - Same Subject - Repeat

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
This week’s BobBlast is about my time honored, daily studio exercise:  Why and how I practice small multiple “warm up” paintings before working on larger pieces.

Athletes and musicians practice and do stretching exercises before performing. I have always felt artists can also benefit by practicing small, repeated exercises too! My practice time is painting the same image - a series - over and over. I am influenced by the writings of Robert Motherwell and his practice of “Automatism.” 

In this BobBlast, you will see how I use my 5 Cs to determine the focus and direction for my warmups: 
  1. Concept - Vase of Flowers
  2. Composition - Cruciform
  3. Color Combo - Ultramarine Blue Dominant
  4. Continue the Series
  5. Commit to the Concept!

Step One - You will see the first stage of drawing in the composition for the entire series.
Step Two - The color combo established the background.

My Demo is - Step Three - I add the Focal point Color (yellow) and the 2 Spice Colors (Green and Red). You will see how, by repeating myself, I paint looser and freer the more I use this assembly line painting technique . 

To take the pressure off the thought that all the warmups you do must be a masterpiece - just remember the saying “Many are called, but few are chosen.” The best "little gems” end up in the galleries or on the internet for sale. These warmups are practice and process! That’s how we learn and get to be a better painter.

Just to let you know, since painting is my passion as well as my profession, I continue to practice everyday. I have been doing this for 28 years. It’s never too late to start this studio practice - remember, Grandma Moses was 85 when she started painting and lived to 105! There’s a message in there somewhere!

To achieve new and inventive pieces, practice painting like a made scientist!
