Weekly BobBlast Issue 322
Upside Down?

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
Upside Down
I'm no expert, but I've heard that if you look at your painting turned upside down, you'll be able to critique it better! They were right!

This BobBlast is all about a few ways I look at and critique my work… While painting and later, when I feel the work might be finished. I don't often finish a painting after the "first pass" - I have learned to live with it for a little while, hanging it on my studio wall. I look at it both right side up and upside down!

But first, how do I view my work? Initially - I re-read my criteria for each painting (what was the concept and does the image match the title?) Next - I turn each painting upside down and look at it from across the room. I look specifically for a graphic impact and a clear compositional design. If my critique passes that, I look at the Color Combination and ask, "Is this the best I could do?"

But… what happens when you turn your painting upside down? What you DON'T SEE is a technically-skilled painting. Instead, you what YOU SEE is Contrast, Composition, Color and Clarity of your Commitment. Yes - the Cs I always talk about.

There are other ways of looking at your paintings too… One of my favorites is a piece of red Plexiglas. Look through it at your painting and you will see just the lights and darks - the contrast. You will also clearly see your focal point… or not. That is what a value finder is for.

Here's another way: Use your cell phone to take a photo, then switch to grey tone in "edit."
There you have it! A value study, a monochromatic black and white version of your painting. This should help you decide what to do next - a stronger focal point? More contrast? Clearer composition design?

So, whether you view your paintings turned upside down, through a red Plexiglas, or from a black and white photo on your phone, include this step to look at your work. I find it less confusing and a clear way to determine when and if the painting is done.

Speaking of upside down… when was the last time you stood on your head?
