Let the Surface Know Who's the Boss

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!

I paint on canvas, watercolor paper, wood panels, aluminum and yes… wine barrels. For all of these surfaces, I use professional-grade acrylic paint, such as Holbein. They have high color pigment and that is what I am looking for in my paint. The color I put down on the surface dries with the same vibrancy as when wet.

Because all of these surfaces differ in so many ways - and texture - I apply acrylic gesso (primer) on everything… every surface! The demo in this BobBlast shows how I apply gesso to three different surfaces: Watercolor Paper, Wood Panel and Canvas. You will see me use a brush specifically made for gesso and also use cardboard scraps to trowel
the gesso on the surfaces!

Here is my materials list for this demo:
•Cheap Joe's Gesso
•Utrecht's Professional Gesso
•Kilimanjaro 300 lb watercolor paper
•Cheap Joe's Prime Really Good Cradled Painting Panel
•Masterpiece Artist Canvas
•Holbein Color Gesso (Orange is my favorite!)

Why the gesso? The reason is… all my substrates will be identical when I use a coat of acrylic primer (gesso). When I paint, I'll know what to expect because all the substrates will have the same surface. I will know how the paint will behave.

After applying the gesso, I let it dry thoroughly before painting. Whether I use a white gesso - or one of Holbein's twenty colors of gesso - I will be ready to paint. For my daily warm up paintings, I divide a full sheet of watercolor paper (22x30 inches) in ten 6.5x9.5 inch "little gems" - Take a look at the photo above to see how I paint.

Now I am all primed and ready to paint!
