I received an email recently - asking if I could do a demo on painting palm trees. I started thinking about palm trees and beach vacations… not easily done right now. So I thought a bit more and figured that I could paint these wonderful, majestic and very comical trees, while pretending I am on a beach vacation!
So… Palm Trees! I paint the essence and personality - instead of going for a perfect botanical duplication. So for this demo, you are getting a version of a palm tree!
It's a loose, drippy beginning with different colors on top of a warm background. After that background color has dried, I splash around with opaque colors and make the overall shape and body of the fronds. After that, I cut into these shapes with a 1-1/2 inch wide flat brush, defining the silhouette.
Then I'll do whatever I want to add life to the simple demonstration - with fluorescent colors - in spots to be highlights implying early morning light or sunsets.
One of my favorite places to paint palm trees is in Boca de Tomatlan at the Casa de Los Artistas. I have done an annual workshop there for years - sadly not this year. We are scheduled for January 2022.
