Art School 101 with this week’s BobBlast, featuring another great reminder - Perspective! Perspective drawing is one of the earliest lessons you learn in art class. My first experience with perspective was in the fourth grade, when I was shown how to draw a dimensional object. I was hooked on drawing objects ever since!
This BobBlast explains and shows a quick way to draw a two dimensional building-like shape using 2-Point Perspective. It comes in handy if you are painting a city street scene from your point of view (level from where you are standing). Of course you can apply to landscapes in nature as well.
This is what you will see: The buildings closest to you will be the tallest. The buildings farther away will appear shorter. To create this illusion, using 2-Point Perspective, follow these steps:
- Determine your horizon line
- Draw in your two vanishing points - far right and far left on the horizon line
- Draw a vertical line which will be the front edge of the building closest to you
- On the vertical line, also draw two points of reference on the top and bottom
- Connect the dots and points from the left horizontal line to the top of the vertical; repeat for the right side
- On the left side, draw a line from the VP to the bottom of the vertical line; repeat for the right side
- Now paint the shadow side. This will emphasize the size of the building.
2-Point Perspective makes for a stronger and convincing design. It helps to create an illusion of depth and distant space. But that's not all! The next BobBlast will feature 3-Point Perspective. It's a pretty cool and simple way to draw a three dimensional object. It helps knowing where to place shadows and highlights!
