The color green tends to spark a lively conversation amongst my workshop students. Some love it - some hate it - most don't how how to use it and are even afraid to experiment with it!
It's on the Color Wheel, for crying out loud! I understand the color green right out of the tube may be too strong, too acidy-looking, or too raw. Well, it is - so I like to examine all the green colors offered by the top paint manufacturers… like Holbein's Shadow Green, Cyprus Green and Sap Green.
This BobBlast demo shows how I experiment with mixing my own greens to incorporate into my paintings. I mix to soften the impact of the raw-green-out-of-the-tube into a more neutral, softer green. Using the Standard (12-color) Color Wheel, I mix any cool blue with a complementary warm yellow/orange… and LOTS of Titanium White. Making a studio color chart of a variety of neutrals is very helpful when I am looking for that perfect green to add to my work.
I don't hate green. Green straight-out-of-the-tube is not your only option. Be a painter, explorer, inventor, a mad scientist - surround yourself with people who support your inquisitiveness and original creativity. Don't forget to make your color chart!
Make others Green with envy!
