I work on a series! When I first get to my studio in the morning, I do at least six loose daily warmup paintings - in a series: same subject, color combination, or composition. They are SIBLINGS not TWINS… I am not trying to make duplicate copies. Much more fun and satisfying to make each one a little different - yet similar.
But - if I want to switch it up a bit or take those warmup paintings to the next level, I add collage!
In this BobBlast, my demo starts with two quarter sheets of watercolor paper. Loose, warmup pears are already sketched in - now to spice it up a bit and to keep me excited, I add graphic collage elements!
My first step is to spread acrylic gel medium over the entire surface of the paper. Then I began to freely layer collage paper - torn pieces, not cut. Everything appears random at the start!
Second step - after I layer the collage paper, I spread additional gel medium on top of the entire surface to "seal" it all down. I use a brayer to squeeze out the excess gel and eliminate air bubbles. My favorite one right now is by Catalyst - all silicon, so paint doesn't stick to it. Here is the best part - while your mixed media piece is not dried, you can still paint acrylic paint on top of it. Acrylic (gel medium) sticks to acrylic (paint).
The final step is to apply a coat of clear, acrylic varnish. Then… sign it!
Mix it all up!
