I paint vessels, cups, glasses and vases. Recently I decided to change things up and look at these subjects from a different perspective. Instead of the normal three-quarter looking down view or the straight on view, I decided to try the bird’s eye view… looking straight down.
Changes to consider when changing the perspective - Instead of painting ovals of cups, glasses, vases, etc. I started out with the top lip of a cup - a circle. The saucer would be a circle too.
Note: If you aren’t confident painting circles free hand, initially use a template, such as a jar lid. As you can see in the video, after using the circle template, I simply build the painting from there.
After establishing the initial circle (top view) of the cup, now it’s time to put in the lights and darks. Just because it is a view of looking straight down on your subject, that doesn’t mean there is not a light source. To show that light direction, I start with placing a strong shadow on the table, coming from the cup. This helps to visually anchor the cup.
Next - observe the inside of the cup. What happens to the light? Is there liquid in the cup? What color or colors do I want to play with?
This demo is a simple one - I started out this practice exercise with the thought of a different perspective. Give it a try!
