After two years of virtually no travel, I am on the road again! This time to Dillman's in Wisconsin - 2 workshops: Abstract Painting & Collage and then a special Studio Mentor Workshop at my favorite workshop space in the North Woods!
This week's BobBlast topic is Mixed Media Answers - Part One. But first, I show you what I am taking to my workshops at Dillman's - and WHY I am taking these particular supplies. I also talk about how I pack for air travel. So… with this in mind - Enjoy this Best of BobBlast!
Paint with everything! If it sticks on the surface, I am using it! This BobBlast is about mixed media and collage. But first … to clear things up: The term ‘Medium” is just ONE. “Media” is more than one medium = Mixed media.
I admit that I enjoy the fun of using three-dimensional objects on the canvas - or heavy texture and thick gels that I can swirl around. It is like painting, sculpting and texturizing all at the same time. It’s also a combination of paint, papers, pencils, gold leaf - YES - Mixed Media!
When I work in mixed media, I work on heavier surfaces: 300 lb paper, heavy canvases or wood panels because of the stability.
My routine for starting mixed media work:
- I apply gesso on the entire surface - even the sides
- My adhesive is regular gel medium - full strength!
- For texture, I trowel on heavy gel medium and scrape into it
Prepping Papers:
- I paint my own collage papers and make copies
- Cardboard that you soak and separate makes great textural forms
- Glue paper shapes onto paper or canvas - follow your composition chart
Look for new stuff! In the next BobBlast I will demo more Mixed Media!
