This BobBlast is a fun subject - I have heard from so many people that they LOVE my carrot people… today’s demo takes the carrot people a step further!
When I'm painting the illusion of the human form - I think "Carrot." A dot for the head and then brushing in an abstract figure shape underneath the dot. I practice the shapes over and over with only black acrylic paint and a big brush.
When I practice painting carrots, I exaggerate the poses and add a dramatic element of suggested capes, hats and other fashionable accessories. I often start with black acrylic paint to get the basic shape and pose, then add the colors after the black base has dried.
So, this last week I was in my studio, painting and I happened to look in my water bucket - there was shape that reminded me of a carrot person - but it was SO MUCH MORE! The stance was comical and exaggerated. “This could be fun,” I thought.
I took out a full sheet of Kilimanjaro watercolor paper, Holbein Acrylic Inks in Magenta, Ultramarine and Black. I also grabbed my trusty favorites - Marigold and Luminous Opera acrylics. I selected a big brush - loaded it full of pure color and water and began splashing a whole row of “human shapes” - letting them drip down.
At this point, I can draw back into the wet paper with water-soluble pencils - I can let the colors flow into each other - I can wipe away some of the color, leaving stained sections. Pure moving paint around and doing a lot of “what if” experimentation.
In painting these Carrots with Attitude, I think about movement, motion, action… what are these goofy figure doing? Dancing, Stretching, Running, Fencing - the list is endless! Give you and your viewer something fun to look at.
