This week's BobBlast takes a look at how and why I paint a series of small warmup paintings before working large. These daily routines are my stretching, warm up painting exercises where I repeat the same image over and over.
For these warmups, I am using Fabriano Studio Watercolor Paper Pad, 140 lb, HP 9 x 12 inches. I work on 3-6 paintings at the same time. Before starting to paint, I temporarily tape the back so they don’t move around. That group of paintings will be one series of the same subject - today’s group is pears. These are my warmup, practice pieces... I figure athletes and musicians repeat stretching, warmup exercises before performing. We artists could be doing this too!
I start by toning all the surfaces with a mid-tone. My go-to is Marigold, with maybe a little Opera added. I use a paper towel to apply the mid-tone so it dries quickly.
Using a large brush, I “draw” my pear shape with red. I already decided that I am using the color combination of Red, Yellow and Blue.
Now I am ready for the Darks and Lights:
•Add the lightest lights - White and a light yellow
•Then… Add the darkest darks - Dark blue, dark red
•As you paint the pear, paint the back wall.
•Re-establish your Lights and Darks
•Anchor your pear with a shadow
Other than Pears, I have painted an entire garden of fruits and vegetables! I get my inspiration from the Burpee Seed Catalog. My series is called “Farmers Market.”
