Prepping Your Open Studio

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!

It’s that time of year to see ads and invites for Open Studio! It’s an opportunity for your friends, art patrons and the community to visit your workplace and see where and how you create. You are a curiosity to non-creatives! In my experience, the easier I can make it for customers to walk around the studio and look at the work, the easier it can be to make sales.

This BobBlast zeros in on three must-do's to get paintings "Show-Ready" for Open Studio! Finishing the painting is just a part of the process… these final steps before it goes out the door is the necessary completion. It’s all about the presentation!

These three steps work for me:

1. I put my signature on the front of the painting. On the back, I write the title, date, my name and contact info. There is also a statement about the painting being an original piece of art. Please feel free to use or modify the following statement:

“This is an original painting created with professional, conservation quality art materials, protected under the copyright laws and may only be reproduced with permission in writing from the artist.”

2. I have many small paintings on paper. They are signed, titled, matted with a backboard and protected with a reusable clear bag. These small paintings go into bins, separated subject matter.

3. The larger paintings on watercolor paper are mounted on a cradled wood panel. I mimic the steps in the video, and you can see exactly how I make a contemporary presentation for my works on paper - without glass, mats or frames!
