Mustangs Sweep George Ranch, Advance in Playoffs

The Memorial High School Mustangs Varsity Baseball team continued their postseason run with a hard-fought sweep of the George Ranch Longhorns, advancing to the next round of the playoffs.

In game one on May 7, the Mustangs edged George Ranch 2–1 behind a dominant outing from Grant Sperandio, who struck out 11 over six-plus innings. Isaac Richardson provided all the offense, blasting a solo home run and adding a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the sixth. Strong defense, led by Dillon Norris, helped secure the tight win.

The Mustangs followed with a 4–2 victory in game two, using timely hitting and strong pitching to complete the sweep. Matthew Manis set the tone on the mound, while Wyatt Baskin delivered key relief innings. Jake Earnest led the offense with three hits, and Grant Sperandio and Tanner Drda each drove in two runs.

GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL NEWS

PLAYOFFS CLENCHED!!
Under blistering Texas heat at Dulles High School and Mercer Stadium, Memorial High School’s girls flag football team battled through four playoff victories Saturday, scoring 101 total points to advance to next week’s round.
With soaring temperatures, suffocating humidity, and almost no wind cutting through the air, the turf felt nearly like lava beneath their feet. Still, Memorial refused to slow down. These athletes pushed through exhaustion, cramps, and relentless pressure while competing for nearly six straight hours of playoff football.
Memorial opened with a dominant 38-6 win over Spring Woods behind touchdowns from Catherine Daly, Daniela Valle, A’yana Harris, Reese Listengart, Brooklyn McGill, and Mia Robles. Defensive plays from Amayria Platt and Daniela Valle helped set the tone early.
Against Travis, Memorial survived one of its toughest battles of the day in a 31-19 victory. Ellie Listengart electrified the sideline with a pick-six, while Catherine Daly delivered one of the day’s biggest moments with a touchdown run across nearly the entire field. Defensive pressure from Ashlyn Koy helped seal the win.
By Game 3 against Austin, exhaustion had fully set in, but Memorial fought through for a 20-12 victory. Ashlyn Koy dominated defensively with multiple sacks and critical stops, while touchdowns from Catherine Daly, Ellie Listengart, and Nan Carrillo secured the win.
In the final game against Clements, Memorial’s defense completely took over in a gritty 12-0 shutout. More sacks from Ashlyn Koy kept pressure on Clements before A’yana Harris and Catherine Daly sealed the victory with late touchdowns.
Catherine Daly led Memorial with 30 points, followed by Ellie Listengart with 20. A’yana Harris and Reese Listengart added 12 each, while Brooklyn McGill scored 7. Daniela Valle, Nan Carrillo, and Mia Robles each added 6 points during the historic run.
Memorial now advances to the Houston Area Regional Tournament on May 16 at Houston Methodist Training Center.

GIRLS GOLF NEWS

The Memorial High School Girls Golf Team represented their school with determination at the UIL State Golf Tournament held Monday, May 4, and Tuesday, May 5, at the prestigious TPC San Antonio — the same championship course that hosted a PGA Tour event just five weeks earlier. The team earned an impressive 11th-place finish while battling challenging conditions that included misting rain, cold winds, and Texas heat. Throughout the tournament, the players showed tremendous resilience and steady improvement against some of the top competition in the state.

Senior Sydney Marrs delivered one of the team’s most impressive turnarounds, cutting an outstanding 13 strokes from her first-round score to her second-round finish. Leading the charge was junior Lynette Li, who demonstrated tremendous focus by shaving five strokes off her score from day one to day two. Junior Chloe Wang showcased consistency and poise throughout the event, posting four consecutive pars on day one with five total pars, then adding another five pars during day two competition. Fellow junior Emily Rouse also made significant strides, improving by three strokes on the second day while recording three birdies over the course of the tournament. Freshman Amanda Lee rounded out the team effort with a remarkable eight-stroke improvement from day one to day two. She recorded a birdie and three pars in the opening round and came back even stronger on day two with seven pars. A big thank you to senior Maria Hernandez who accompanied the team to serve as alternate.

Competing on one of the toughest courses in the state against elite competition, the Memorial Girls Golf Team demonstrated perseverance and teamwork, a testament to the hard work and dedication that carried them all the way to the state tournament.

We look forward to celebrating the 2025-2026 season at the Boys and Girls Golf Banquet on Monday.
