Libby,

Yesterday's gun violence at the King Estates campus shocks the soul - our schools are sanctuaries for our children. OUSD is providing counseling for students, families and workers impacted by this traumatic event, and Oakland Police are investigating. The unbridled access to firearms and rising psychosis of violence in our country are inexcusable.

Welcome to the Mayor’s Weekly Briefing, your weekly Oakland news roundup. You can read, subscribe, and catch up on past newsletters at our newsletter homepage on the City of Oakland website.

New Bills from Sacramento to Fight Housing Crisis

This week, Governor Gavin Newsom has signed several bills which will help our state and region battle our housing and homelessness crises. Here are two which have the potential to make a big impact:

  • AB 2097 bans parking requirements for new housing projects which are located within half a mile of public transit, which in effect will remove parking minimums on new housing projects in most cities.

  • SB 6 and AB 2011 will allow and incentivize housing projects on commercial-zoned properties otherwise reserved for retail and office buildings, as well as require that construction workers earn good wages and benefits.

Zoo Rescues 140 Night Herons in Downtown Oakland

Image via Oakland Zoo

The beloved black-crowned night heron is Oakland's official birdand an important part of our city's nature and culture. During the night heron's 5-month long nesting season, however, fledgling herons sometimes fall from their nests, which is particularly dangerous when those nests are located above busy Oakland streets. This year, the Oakland Zoo formed an official Heron Rescue Team (HRT) to respond to herons who may have been injured or displaced. At the end of the nesting season, this amazing team rescued 140 herons in Downtown Oakland! Visit the Oakland Zoo's Heron Rescue Project to support these efforts, learn more, or get involved yourself.
