Black Out & Class Color Day

From the Principal

Dear St. Brendan Families,

Thank you to all of our families who volunteered or helped to promote our Open House last weekend. It was a huge success with the school buzzing with new families learning about our school and classrooms. It is encouraging to begin our enrollment season on a strong, positive note with a busy Open House! Thank you also to the following students for giving testimonials after the Masses this past weekend: Gabby Mascarenhas, Callie Taylor, Brady Davis, and Marianna Munoz.

Catholic Schools Week is in full swing. This is a fun week where we celebrate our school and the gift of Catholic education. Reminder that this Friday, February 3rd for our all school, family lunch. This is a day where parents/family members get to come to school, see the classrooms, and have lunch with their students. It will also be a 12:45 early release day.

Tomorrow, February 2nd 6:30pm-7:30pm for our first in-person Parent Club meeting in over 3 years! This will be an informative and engaging meeting where you will get to learn important information about upcoming events and meet other parents in our community. Childcare is available (please sign up in advance if you need childcare). Parents who attend will also receive a free dress pass for their student(s) and a volunteer hour. You won't want to miss this event!

Thank you for all you do for our students and our school!

Blessings,

Catholic Corner

The Virtue of the Month for February is Prudence, making good decisions in specific circumstances. Our Saint of the Month guessing jar will focus on Pope St. John XXIII. St. John XXIII showed prudence when he worked to save thousands of Jews from the holocaust, and when he convened the Second Vatican Council. You can learn more about Pope St. John XXIII and figure out the answer to the question accompanying the Guessing Jar by reading his STORY.

You can also practice Prudence all during February with these AT HOME activities.

Prayer to Pope St. John XXIII

St. John XXIII, you saw the needs of the Church and convened the Second Vatican Council. Help us, when we see a problem, to remember to pray to discover the best solution. Give us your lightheartedness and trust in the Lord. Help us to work for the salvation of all peoples as you did. Amen. St. John XXIII, pray for us.

In the past few months, our Covid infections have been at a low level; which is excellent! We have had several students who have been out ill with colds, flu, and other respiratory illnesses. As we are in flu season, please continue to be diligent in monitoring for symptoms, testing for Covid and keeping your students home when they are not feeling well.

Catholic Schools Week

National Catholic Schools Week 2023 is January 29th - February 4th. A tradition this week is to dress up in a different theme each day. The Student Council has planned the following Dress Up days:

Thursday (Feb 2) - Celebrate Parents & Families

Theme: Tropical/Hawaiian Day

  • wear Hawaiian shirts, grass skirts, flower leis, shorts, sunglasses, and sun hats. For safety reasons, students may not wear sandals or flip flops.

Friday (Feb 3)- Celebrate the Community

Theme: Free Dress and

"Anything but a Backpack" for 5th-8th & "Bring a Stuffed Animal" for grades P3 - 4th.

  • Free Dress Day. 5th-8th students can bring their books and supplies in anything but a backpack. They must be able to carry it up and down the stairs independently. Elementary students can bring a stuffed animal (choose carefully and don’t bring any valuable animals).
  • This will be our All-School Family Lunch & Recess from 11:30 – 12:30. Lunch provided by families – no hot lunch this day. School will dismiss at 12:45. Extended Care will be open until 6:00 PM (please register in advance).

All School Family Lunch & Recess

Friday, Feb. 3

Family Lunch

A tradition at St. Brendan School during Catholic Schools Week is the Family Lunch & Recess. This is happening Friday, February 3. We invite families or special persons to come and have lunch at school with your children. You can pack your own lunches, or bring in a lunch from your favorite restaurant. Please remember that we are a nut-free school.

Here are some logistics:

  • Parking will be available in the St. Brendan Church parking lot, at the Church of the Living God parking lot that is across 195th St., or you can look for street parking. The school parking lot will be closed to allow for our all-school recess.
  • All parents and guests will need to sign-in at the main office for safety reasons. We will have a process to streamline the visitor check in so it should be very quick. This will also be the time that you can sign out and indicate if you will be taking your child home before the 12:45 dismissal.
  • Lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m. You can eat in your student’s classroom, in the gym, or in the art/music room. If you have more than one student, you can gather them all and sit together in one of the classrooms or in the gym.
  • You may pack a lunch for you and your student, or bring in lunch from a favorite restaurant. Lunches must be nut-free. There is no hot lunch this day.
  • Following lunch, the whole school (parents and students) will go outside for recess. Bring a raincoat and/or umbrella in case it rains.
  • At 12:30, recess will end and students will return to class. If you want to take your student home at that time, they need to have been signed out in the main office (you can do this at check-in at 11:30).
  • Students not leaving early will return to class and go through normal carpool - 12:45 PM dismissal. Extended Care will be open until 6:00 PM (please register in advance).

Extended Care this Friday, Feb. 3rd

Friday, February 3rd is our All-School Family Lunch and we have a 12:45 PM dismissal. Afternoon extended care will be open until 6:00 PM, but we request that you sign up in advance so we can plan our staffing that day.

Click Here to Sign Up for Extended Care on Friday, Feb. 3rd.

Uniform Exchange this Friday

The uniform exchange will be open in the gym this Friday during the Family lunch. Please look through and help yourself to any uniforms (we're overflowing!)

At this time, we are recruiting volunteer chaperones for the dance. You do not need to be a 7th & 8th grade parent to chaperone. The dance will start at 7:00 p.m. Below are the volunteer jobs we will need help with.

Volunteer Roles:

  • Check In – collecting payment, permission forms, cell phones and coats
  • Selling Concessions
  • Monitoring Exits
  • Monitoring students on the dance floor and periodically checking bathrooms
  • Clean up – putting away tables and chairs and sweeping the floors. The dance will end at 9:00 p.m., so expect to stay until about 9:30 p.m. Please do not leave until everything is cleaned up and put away.

Please contact Mrs. Lambert, [email protected], if you are able to chaperone the dance on February 9. We are looking forward to a fun night!
