Redistricting Commission Meetings
The City’s Redistricting Commission will hold two meetings for residents to review and provide feedback on the Commission’s preliminary City District maps prior to the Commission presenting its report to the City Council on September 27th.
The Commission has been meeting since May to review the 2020 Census data, data from the University regarding its residential population, and projections for the residential projects under construction. An analysis of the population data confirms that the City must adjust the current district boundaries in order to have equal districts. The first Redistricting Commission presentation of the data and preliminary districts will be held at Davis Hall on Thursday, September 1, 2022 at 7:00 pm. Residents will also be able to participate remotely via https://zoom.us/j/91603412440, but please note that the hybrid meeting capability at Davis Hall is less robust than at City Hall. The preliminary maps will be provided on the City website at the link above by 5 pm on Thursday, August 25 th.
The second Redistricting Commission presentation of the data and preliminary districts will be held at Monday, September 12th at 7:00pm in City Hall. This meeting will also be hybrid and participants can access the meeting via https://zoom.us/j/91603412440. |

Woody Yard Waste Requirements Waived Through August 15, 2022
The City's Department of Public Works' crews are continuing cleanup work to pick up debris from the severe weather event that occurred on Tuesday, July 12, 2022.
The revised requirement for collection of woody material will be effective until Monday, August 15.
Due to the excessive amount of woody debris created in the aftermath of the storm, the requirements to prepare debris for curbside collection are being expanded for large diameter branches & limbs, which should be cut into lengths 8 feet or less. Place material at the curb, not in the street, and set away from poles, wires, trees, fire hydrants and vehicles for easier collection. Contact DPW or call 240-487-3590 to request a pick-up and let us know what size material needs to be collected, as this will dictate the equipment sent to perform the collection.
Residents may wonder why yard waste collection has been delayed; please understand that the amount of debris we are picking up is overwhelming our capacity to collect from all homes in the usual time frame. Thank you for your patience as we continue to clean up from this epic storm.
According to Maryland Law, in the aftermath of a weather-related event, which results in fallen trees and debris, or similar incidents that may be qualified as an "act of God," the affected property owners are responsible for damage to their property, including debris cleanup and removal or other related expenses. These weather event related expenses may be covered under the homeowner's insurance policy. Property owners are encouraged to contact their homeowners’ insurance company to determine policy coverage.

Curbside Food Scrap Collection Coming Soon!
The City is preparing to roll out a new curbside food scrap collection this fall!
This optional program will help divert food scraps from the trash, and reduce harmful greenhouse gases emitted from organic decomposition in landfills, which contributes to climate change.
- Voluntary program – residents must opt-in.
- Food scrap collection will become a component of weekly curbside service for those that sign up.
- Program start date and collection day is to be determined, but it will be weekly.

No fee for collection, but residents must contribute 50% of collection container cost - all material must be placed in a cost-share container. Choose from a 12-gallon wheeled cart ($13.00), or a 5-gallon bucket ($9.00). Participants can also choose to purchase a small kitchen pail ($5.00) to store food scraps inside their homes.
- Residents who currently take part in the drop-off program can choose to purchase a new container from the city or continue to use their 5-gallon bucket. If you choose to continue using the drop-off bucket, just check off the 5-gallon bucket, and ignore the shopping cart. Make sure to submit the form by checking off the agreement box, sign, and date.
- Updates will be emailed to those who sign up.
How Do I Sign Up?
Residents can sign up online and choose container(s). Participants are required to select either a 12-gallon wheeled cart ($13.00), or a 5-gallon bucket ($9.00). New Tree Permitting Requirements + Waiver for 7/12/22 Storm-Related Damage
If you have a fallen or damaged tree on your property because of the weather emergency on 7-12-2022, you can remove the tree or fallen branches without a permit. Document or photograph the damage/emergency and send to DPW after at arborist@collegeparkmd.gov.
Those who wish to remove or prune a surviving tree must submit an application for a permit.

Trees are a vital part of our ecosystem. A majority of the City’s tree canopy is in residential neighborhoods -- this means our residents can make a big difference in helping to maintain our tree canopy!
On May 10, 2022, the City Council approved Ordinance 21-O-09, which will require a permit to remove trees on residential land. Starting July 1, 2022, those who wish to remove or prune a tree must submit an application for a permit. Applications are available online, and in-person at the Department of Public Works. There is no application fee to obtain a permit.
The ordinance was enacted to limit the removal of healthy, mature trees as a measure to maintain the City’s tree canopy. The Tree and Landscape Board and City Council held numerous public meetings and incorporated changes to address many concerns and suggestions from residents.

Sidewalk Repairs
The City’s contractor will continue sidewalk repairs in the Lakeland neighborhood next week along 48th Avenue, Navahoe Street, Lakeland Road, and Berwyn House Road.
Sidewalks may be temporarily closed during construction.

Free Fresh Wood Chips Are Available
Due to the recent storm, we have fresh wood chips (not mulch) available for free to use on trails and pathways and well-established planting areas. You do not need to be a resident. Fresh wood chips can deplete nitrogen from the soil, so don’t use them on new plantings. Available at Public Works 9217 51st Avenue. Hours for digging your own wood chips 8am-12pm and 1-3pm. The availability of crew to load material is limited, call 240-487-3593 to schedule an appointment to have your truck or trailer loaded with wood chips.

Scrap Tire Amnesty Day
Get rid of your old scrap tires on September 17, 2022 between 8am - 1pm! This event welcomes the collection of car, bike, trick, and agricultural tires from Prince George's County residents.
County residents in the northern area can bring tires to North County Public Works Salt Dome at 11900 Montgomery Rd. Beltsville, MD 20705
There is a 10 tire limit per vehicle, and multiple trips are not allowed for individuals or vehicles. No commercial vehicles allowed.

Free Summer parking is in effect between May 28 to August 13, 2022 in the Downtown College Park Parking Garage!
Park there for free while you visit local shops and restaurants on weekdays after 5:00 pm and all-day on weekends.

Maryland Department of Agriculture's Mosquito Control Program
The City cooperates with the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) to identify and control mosquito populations by larviciding and spraying. MDA has designated Wednesday nights for adult mosquito spraying in the city (when thresholds are met). Spraying will only begin after dark and may continue until midnight or later. Spray applications are made by truck-mounted ultra-low volume (ULV) sprayers. If you see a truck in your community spraying during the day, please note that it is not from the State of Maryland. Please be aware that MDA does not spray individual properties, and the City is on a 2 or 3-week rotation based on mosquito thresholds.
REQUEST FOR EXEMPTION FROM ADULT MOSQUITO CONTROL SERVICES
Residents can request exclusion from the adult spray program by completing an exemption form annually.

7/18 Contract officers responded to the 8600 block of Baltimore Avenue for a sighting of a suspect that was involved in a shooting on 07/16/22. The suspect was located and taken into custody with out incident.
7/19 Contract officer conducted speed enforcement in the 9000 block Baltimore Avenue (“Mobile” Camera) 43 citations were issued.

The City of College Park is hosting a series of concerts this summer and you are invited! Join us on the plaza at the new City Hall building on select Fridays for Friday Night LIVE! The events will feature a variety of musical genres and performers and will include something for everyone-- music, food, beer, and entertainment. There will be children’s performers, activities and arts and crafts available for kids as well.
The theme this month is Blues! Hear blues with a funk edge from Anthony "Swamp Dog" Clark.
All concerts will be held at City Hall Plaza (7401 Baltimore Avenue) until September from 6:30 to 8:30PM.
Parking will be offered for free at the Downtown College Park parking garage at the corner of Yale and Knox. Local food and beer will be available for purchase during the event!
Don't miss the final Friday Night LIVE event for 2022 on September 9th! The theme will be Oktoberfest.

The City of College Park will host another Family Night at the Movies on Saturday, August 27!
Activities start around 7:00pm with games for kids and adults. The movie, Sing 2, will be shown around 8pm.
Popcorn will be available. Admission and parking are free. Bring Your lawn chairs and blankets to sit outside on the grass.
No pets, tents, or umbrellas.
